I didn't get one when I bought mine because I keep it in a garage at home and it's 2 stories underground at work. Even at this weeks 15 degree weather it blows warm air in about 5 minutes.

There are a few times during the winter when I wish I had it though.

I have the same problem and do the same thing as Jerez suggested. I just make sure to turn the lights off now when I park the truck.

I got one installed and I used it on the really hot days in the summer to cool the truck down before I got in, but I don't like carrying the 2nd remote around with me on my key ring. I wish the system could use my factory remote. Did any Tacomas come with remote start from the factory?

Why do you have 2 remotes?

I haven't seen a system that cannot control the locks and remote start with a single remote. I've got a Viper 5701 installed in my truck and haven't used the OEM fob since I had it installed. It is also nice to have an alarm in the truck (not that anyone pays attention to those things anymore).

I had one on my last truck and loved it except that it was a little glitchy. It was a clifford (can't remember the model number but it was the 5904x's older version with a color screen). Every once in awhile it would start itself up out of the blue. Other than that, i loved the features and wouldn't mind getting one on my Tacoma. Anyone have problems with the newer vipers or are they all pretty trouble free?

I'm wondering if your old Clifford had a setting that turned the truck on automatically. Some remote start systems will turn the vehicle on if it gets too hot or too cold. Some systems will turn the vehicle on at certain intervals. But those are settings that can be turned off, and should be off by default.

I have a Viper 5704 that I installed myself and I love it. I've had it for about 10 months now and I haven't had a single problem yet. If you have any questions about it let me know. I also did a write-up on how to install one here (yes, this is shameless self-promotion :D). A few guys here on TW have used it to successfully install their own. I probably gave more detail than was necessary, so the write-up may seem a little overwhelming at first but its do-able. Its the first and only alarm or remote start I've ever installed. If you decide to install it yourself let me know and I'll help you out if you want.

On three cars I've owned I had installed Compustar 2-way starter and alarm. I have never had any issues with it. I'm hoping to get one before winter, or just shortly after. I miss the comforts of it. Since that I am going to be going up north to work I know that I am going to be needing it soon enough. Love them!

The guy before you might have just cut one wires so he isn't liable if something happens or he just didnt pay to have the remote start portion wired up.

Looking at getting the Viper 4104 installed. When installed, is it wired to honk the horn or the factory 'chime'?

I'm not sure about the 4104, but on my 5704 it has the option of making the horn honk in addition to the 5704's alarm (it's the standard car alarm sounds). I would imagine the 4104 has a similar option.

Actually, the one of the shop workers at the toyota dealer we got the truck off of, left the reciever in the headliner unpluged. I found it two weeks ago and have been LOVING the remote start ever since. Silly shop hands. I even stopped in once and had them look it over and they didn't think to check the reciever. Lololol it happens.

Had the truck for a year and a half and just now found the wire....lololololol.

I have a 2007 Avalon & think it's absolutely RETARDED that the car shuts off when I open the door to get in, yeah it's warmed up but it seems to me the starter takes the brunt of the abuse here starting the car twice! I guess it's good that ppl can't steal your car but otherwise it SUX!

Mine is made so that if you try to put the truck in gear while the key is out of it, it'll kill all power until the key is put in. So you just put the key in, turn to on, push the break and go. Safety is nice. It also locks the doors when it starts by remote. Pretty slick. My only conplant is when i'm working in the house and i'm bent over or crawling around the attic or something, i can hear my truck start in the driveway. So you have to watch it...

I get out of work at 2:30 A, so I use mine starting around mid September when I know the windows will be fogged up on the inside. I need to remember to set the heater controls before I go in to work. My truck will stay running when I open the door, but will shut off if I touch the brake pedal before I put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position. I only got the remote last year, and now wonder how I got by.
