You need to build you kit on what you ultimately want to shoot.

For me is sports, street, and eventually weddings and I'd like to break into commercial

 

Honestly that is all for now. My girlfriend/soon to be fiancé/then soon to be wife wants to have her own studio in the future. She mainly just wants to do baby pictures and probably just formal stuff, but I could always help her out so I would probably need a good sharp lens for that too. So distance/moon shots, sharp outdoor/day shots (some long exposure water shots), and studio shots. Maybe way in the future we might consider weddings, but that's way down the road.

A lot use a 85mm in the studio. Some also use the 70-200 2.8 just depends if you want the compression of the telephoto in the pic and how much space you have to work with.

But if I was really considering a 300mm lens, would the 2nd lens I posted be fine?

 

No, save up for quality glass. IMO stay away from "all in one" lenses

I bet you that lens has tons of distortion, chromatic abbreviation, and it soft at either length of the focal range

I'm thinking second cause the other kyackers are kinda distracting from the hooting and hollering this guy was doing when he made it through this section.

 

Nice photos! 2nd ^ And I do like the nikkor 50mm 1.8. That one is going on my list. I was looking at sample images. A simple cheap lens that can shoot nice shots

 

I actually like the first crop. My eye flow more naturally, down the river and to the subject.
The 2nd, for me, feels like I want to look up beyond the rocks.

I was looking at that one. What exactly is the difference between this one and the other if the other was f3.5-5.6?

 

He could save a little more with the 80-200 f/4. They're cheap used.

 

I don't understand why Nikon doesn't ship that lens with a tripod collar/foot

And after really thinking and comparing, I'm thinking of a d600 over the 800. 800 might be a bit too much for me. The MP would be nice, but the storage would take up a lot of space.
