wtf is wrong with people? i went on a short trip this past weekend. my neighbor came and asked to borrow my shop vac. fuck!

i hate loaning out tools. i just dont have the personality for it. i agonize till i get it back.

i handed it over, and he agreed to bring it back to me MONDAY! it is now wed. no word.

before you ask me WHY i didnt tell him NO..he is a nurse manager at a great hospital. he hires nursing staff, or has great influence on who gets hired. my wife graduates from nursing soon, and he promised to help. i was essentially making sure he knows i am not an ass, and please hire my wife..

shit he hires her, he can keep the damn thing!

my other neighbor borrowed my digging bar. he left it in the rain for a few days..i just couldnt stand it and walked over and took it back. he was clearly done. he never mentioned it again. he doesnt know i have it..for all he knows it is missing. he is never getting a tool again. what an idiot.

Simple, tell him if he is done with it, you need it back to clean out your truck.

If you say it in a very friendly manner, it will not be an issue. Won't hurt any future hiring chances; if you are really worried, just follow up with a "let me know if you need it again in the future" for good measure.

As for the other neighbor, go over and ask if you could get your bar back, you need to uproot a stump. Make him search all over for it (while laughing on the inside).

Never had a neighbor ask for a tool but I used to do the same thing when I worked in an auto shop and I knew where they were going and well...I worked with the guys.

That and getting the tool back dirty. That still pisses me off but I correct it quick, fast, and in a hurry.

I'd do the same with the other neighbor, go over and ask if you can get the shop vac done because you need to ____. That way, it doesn't come across as you being a dick and you get your stuff back. I do that any time someone borrows something of mine and doesn't give it back when they said they would (or asks me if they can borrow it longer).

I never loan tools to anyone...

...because they never come back in the same condition that they left

When someone wants to borrow a tool, they also borrow me who goes along with it to use it properly, so that it comes back in the same condition that it left.

I don't loan stuff out anymore... Good luck to your wife.

Loaned a good lawn mower to a "friend" he brought it back two weeks later and it was trashed. Don't know what he did to it, but it was never the same again.

sucks man. i don’t have the personality to loan them out either really. only a select few people get the privilege of using stuff. one is our neighbor they are pretty cool, they let us ride the rhino and stuff on there property and cut threw their yard/filed next to our house.(there is a 5 acre lot separating the houses) when the utility guys or what ever have our drive way blocked. only let one other person use stuff.

I've only borrowed out a couple tools to strangers and got them back pretty quickly. I don't give them my good tools though, I have some walmart crap that is for times when IDGAF.

Money, tools, women, doesn't matter...same rule applies. Never loan out what you can't afford to give away...

I don't know why people these days do that. I would be super embarrassed to return something that I borrowed like that. I wouldn't even be able to face the person. If I borrow something, it comes back in better shape than when I took it.

I let a guy at my station borrow my fairly new power sprayer. I even let him borrow a gas can. Both were full of gas and clean. When he returned them, which was on time thankfully, it looked like he had taken the sprayer mud riding and neither had a drop of gas in them. Being that I sometimes have a problem with telling it like it is, (I view it as a positive thing) I immediately called him out on it and had him fix it.

He never borrowed anything again from me.

when guys at my work ask to borrow my tools I tell them if I can borrow your truck. I figure 30grand in tools is about = to your truck. That pretty much shuts them up.

neighbor and I borrow each other's stuff all the time. but we are both good about bringing it back the same or next day. of course, half the time we are usually helping each other out so the tools come back with us.

I love loaning tools out to my weird, but friendly, neighbor who has asperberger.

He's like Slingblade... the dude will completely take the tool apart, clean it, relube it, and put it back together just as if it came right out of the box.

That's what I do on the rare occasions when I've absolutely needed to borrow tools. I always return them promptly and in better condition than they were given to me. It also creates goodwill when someone asks to borrow a tool from me and along with the tool they also get my help. :)

I hate borrowing stuff and always try and get it back promptly and in as good or better condition as I got it.
