Yea I know they look good but I've been hearing all these rumors about the 285's robbing performance?? Isn't that why we pay these thousands of dollars for sicky suspension lifts??

    Give me the facts...

How many mpg do I expect to loose?
How noticable is the power to ground ratio loss?
How about road handling and braking power??

I'll be the DD on ICON extendeds external resi's that enjoys the weekend offroading whip about

    I lost 2-3 Mpg's over stock when I bumped up to 285s.

As far as performnace, I didn't notice much loss.

Last time I checked I get 17 freeway and 14 in town

Power: I went from 265s (C load range) to 285s (E load range). The power loss is going to be noticeable, you're effectively reducing the gear ratio of the axles, which makes the truck work harder when starting from a dead stop. I noticed the difference immediately, however, its not huge. I have a 04 TRD 5-Speed w/ OEM 4.10 gears. I don't think its a huge deal, I drive a fair amount of hills on a daily basis and it can be annoying having to down shift when going up big hills. That being said it is not annoying enough to pony up $1200+ for new gears.

Bottom line, if you want stock power either stick with 265s or smaller or get new gears.

Brakes: This was more noticeable than the power to be totally honest. You will have to push the brake pedal harder and further to stop. You wont be putting it to the floor but you will notice the difference. I've had a couple quick stops that had a slight pucker factor. You can always do the Tundra 199mm or 231mm caliper upgrade to improve braking power for around $500-600.

Bottom line: It will take more pedal force to stop the truck with 285s.

Fuel Economy: Expect 1-?? mpg loss. That being said I can still get over 300 miles to a tank with mixed hwy/city diving. But, I've also gotten less than 240 mi to a tank with all city driving and a heavy foot.

Bottom line: You get the point by now...

Oh man, thanks for the info! That was just what I was looking for.
The 285's sure look nice but I think I'm going to stick with the 265's
