how the hell do you remove the air bag? There are no screws on the side of the wheel. The only screws are on the column covers and only visible when you turn the wheel.

My cruise control is working intermittently, would that most likley be the switch/stalk?

    Thanks!

Back side of steering wheel on the sides should have to covers, just make sure to have the battery disconnected and wait about 10 minutes before disconnecting airbag, and make sure you don't have any static charge on you

I don't think so but am not sure....it's getting the cc to turn on that is the problem. Once I get the switch to turn it on it functions perfectly.

Pop off the cover surrounding the cruise control and the same cover on the opposite side. I believe its a t-40 torx. You will need a tiny screwdriver or pick to lift the clip of the airbag connector after loosening it. Disconnect your battery first though. Chances are your clockspring is faulty. There is a recall for that.

    Thanks guys!

My thinking with it being the switch versus the clock spring is the intermittent functoning of it. If it was the spring wouldn't it quit working completely?

Also, do you have to remove the steering wheel to replace the cruise switch?

No it's the clockspring (was on mine)
    Mine did be same
Try this: with the truck on turn the steering wheel to either the 9 or 3 o'clock position and turn the cruise control, if it turns on then it's the clock spring

I think you may be right except mine is just the opposite I got it to turn on when the wheel is straight and then turned it to the nine and three positions and it wouldn't shut off.

I know, I was hoping it'd be the switch...a lot cheaper. I'm probably going to wait til it goes out completely before fixing it.

if the cable is broke how does it work at all?

its just the part where the cruise is electrically connected inside the spiral cable that is damaged...

There is a recall for the clockspring/spiral cable.
Check your truck in the Toyota owners web site and see if it applies to you.

mine has the steering wheel controls, and is not included in the recall. Evidently it's still a problem though and Toyota won't fix it.

If the truck is under warranty, they have to fix it.
If it is not under warranty, they have to fix it but will charge you for it.

Don't expect anything for free out of warranty.

But the cable is not TOO difficult to replace yourself if you are comfortable pulling the wheel.

They'll fix it but I think the quote was around $500; which is ridiculous. This truck has had more issues like this then my previous 3 Toyotas combined.

That's worth a shot at DIY.
You can probably buy the cable and the steering wheel puller for half that.
