Hopefully they figure shit out with the 3rd gen frames. I went through the frame replacement with my 1st gen and it took nearly a month for them to finish the job. My spare flew out from underneath my truck because even that hanger thing rusted apart. Now toyota has a recall for first gen spare tire hangers. Im glad you kept your cool man. These things usually work out for the better. They actually extended the warranty on first gen frames to 13 years if im not mistaken, because they knew they made a shit product.

From the looks, I think at some point Toyota imporved paint work on those frames. Not sure exactly when but 2013 comes in with plastic plugs protecting inside of the frame and paint job looks much different on those frames than what Toyota had initially.

OP that is great news that Toyota is replacing the frame for you

not to nitpick or anything but the way dealers get inventory through aution processes and trade ins from people who have moved etc, this is hardly relevant.
Of course, It's always worth it to check when you're buying but comparing 2 vehicles with no other info isn't very telling.

Exactly. The used vehicles aren't necessarily sourced from in-state. The 3rd Gen 4Runner we bought in GA came from FL and it shows with the white looking oxidation it has.

That pristine F150 could have come from farther down south.

My 06 looks about the same. I reported it to Toyota North America a couple months back and got the same "no action" response.

I was planning to grind and paint the frame soon (possibly this weekend). Reading this thread, I wonder if I should wait.

Fluid film every year remove all the tires (5) and spray it big time with a Wagner electric paint gun. Frame is full of dirt but it's still black every where and under the dirt is still an oily film. FF may not be for neat nicks it is dirty and it comes off on you when you work on it but there is not a hint of rust any where.

I live N. of Boston and just found a hole by the transmission cross member while looking for a rattling heat shield.. Mine is an 06 as well. I'll be making a trip to the dealer very shortly.

I just completed my multi month project on my frame. Two coats of Rust Bullet and two coats of Rustoleum black to the parts I could reach and that were actually rusty. Next month I'll do the whole frame and underside with some Fluid Film. No matter which way you slice it, it's a suck job to undertake.

I'm just working on the same project you just finished. I planned to wire wheel the whole frame (where I can get to anyway) and apply Rust Bullet, Rust Bullet Black Shell top coat and Fluid Film, but I realized it is much much more difficult and time consuming that I thought.

Now, I'm working only on sections that need attention. Most of it is still nice and clean and original paint is not peeling off etc. Hopefully I can finish up this weekend and then order Fluid Film spray kit and be done with it. One thing I've learned, I never want to do this again!

Once I'm done I will post some pictures and impressions in my frame rust thread.

Back in July 2006 I posted about finding rust through holes in my 2006 Tacoma frame with 39,000 miles. My original dealer was of no help, but the second dealer I went to had it inspected by Toyota and a frame replacement was authorized in early September. They build the frames on demand and it took 6 weeks before a frame came in. Then they had the truck about a week. They found a number of frame cross member, front drive train support members, spare tire holder, and so on parts badly rusted as well that were not covered. The dealer agreed that since they had to take them off anyway that if I bought new parts they would install at no extra cost (no labor) so about $500 in replacement parts went on with the frame. So by early November I had the truck back with a new frame. They did a good job, including swapping over my Firestone rear air bag suspension parts. Still lots of rust to be found, as on the trailer hitch so I need to go under next spring and protect the new parts and preserve the old.

So find a good dealer and get some help with your rusted frame.

My frame isn't rotten but it's got a decent amount of surface rust. Kinda wish it would rot out just so I could get a new one.

I got my oil changed and took a look under my 2006 and it didn't look good. It is not as bad as some of the pics on here, but I just made an appointment at the dealer to have them take a look. I lost my 99 to this and bought the 06 with the gobs of money they gave me. I don't want to lose this one and will definitely do the frame change if offered. If it is too bad, I will have to trade this one in while it still has value.

I have heard that they nickel and dime you with charges during the frame change. It is all optional and you just pay for parts, but it adds up. Not looking forward to that.

Another frame replacement success story, I hope mine don't get like this.
