ToyotaCare - Oil Change interval

I am picking up my new 2013 DCSB TRD Sport tomorrow from the dealer. With my purchase they are including ToyotaCare free of charge. With that they will change my oil for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles. They explained that the new trucks come with synthetic oils and therefore they change the oil at 10,000 miles. That seams really high for my taste. I would think that 5,000 or 7,500 miles at the most, but not 10,000 miles.

What say you?

 

The V6s don't come with synthetic from the factory. The 4cyl does.

It's free every 5k so whatever they put into mine is fine with me. Since Toyota is allowing it every 5k I'd stick with that.

 

Interesting. I guess the salesman that I spoke to needs to do more research before telling me every 10,000 miles. He just started so it doesn't surprise me.

 

Maybe your dealership changes it to synthetic before they deliver the vehicle?

I'd talk to the service manager after you take delivery.

 

The V6 as well as the 4 cylinders come filled from the factory with 0W20 synthetic oil. Most of the V6's are still using conventional 5W20 oil which is changed every 5k under ToyotaCare. The 4 cylinders all use 0W20synthetic are are to be changed every 5k per your owners manual. Check the oil cap to be certain for your truck and also ask the dealer to run your VIN# in national service history and it will show what oil the ToyotaCare program is providing you each service. I've been with Toyota for 16 years and work in the service department, we see very few Tacoma V6 requiring 0W20 synthetic unlike the 4Runners that are mostly synthetic these days.

 

Not to argue but I think your wrong on most of this. The v6 comes with conventional and it's 5w-30. The 4 cylinder also is recommended 7500 mile oil changes. Maybe I'm wrong but I believe that is how it is.

 

If a salesman tried to feed me that crap, I would have walked off the lot.

 

They also told me 10,000 miles with synthetic on my 2013. 10,000 miles is too high for my comfort and considering changing it at the first 5000 myself and take it in at 10,000.

 

Yup, that's my plan also.

 

Hello Guys,hope everyone is doing great.To my understanding the new 0-20W oil is the one made for Toyota from Mobil One, I have a 2012 Double cab with the 4cyl and it uses this oil,being changed every 5000 miles. The 6 Cyl according to the 2012 manual can use 5-30W. Remember the maintenance light goes on at 5000 every time. We also have a 2012 Highlander with the 6cyl even though it is not same engine as the Tacoma light goes on every 5000 miles, and it uses the 0-20W but they change the oil every 10000 miles. I would use the 5-30W of any oil if you change it every 5000. All oils are great now,no such thing as a bad oil anymore,specially if you change it every 5000. Remember this is the 6cyl Tacoma,all others use the synthetic 0-20W. I had in the pass a 1998 Tacoma with the 4cyl 2.4,great engine by the way,always used since new 5-30W synthetic,was able to afford due to buying it from Costco or Sams by the case and doing it myself. Did notice that even though living in Florida heat or cold engine ran great,did keep the truck in good shape, would have still had it but wife driven got total in accident. Love that truck. Now I have this one hope did not tired you with information,but I also wanted to use regular oil with new truck and did not know it comes with oil changes every 5000 miles and 0-20W. Thank God for Toyota Care and Toyota Guard that also gives you some oil changes.Take care everyone

 

5000 miles (7500km) for all Tacoma. 0w20/5w20 for the 2.7, 5w30 for the 4.0.

SOME Toyota models running 0w20 synthetic spec 10k changes, but the Tacoma has not (yet) been approved for that change interval.
This is the source of confusion at the dealerships.

 

I have a 13 DC with a V6. I asked the question to the service dept at the dealership, that if I wanted my first oil changed at 2k miles instead of 5k miles would I have to pay for that oil change?
I was told NO, that first oil change would be one of the five that you get from ToyotaCare.
I also asked what would be the upgrade price to Mobil 1? $24.

So it sounds to me you can use all your five oil changes the first year, then your done.

Prior to Toyota installing the "Maintenance Required" idiot light, the change intervals for many (all?) vehicles was 5000 for severe service and 7500 for normal service.
That was the case for my '03 Tundra and my wife's '00 Echo.
The Echo got a facelift and a new dash in '03, and the 7500 mile option was dropped.
I suspect if a 1st-Gen Tacoma owner actually reads their owner's manual, it will allow for up to 7500 on the '95 to at least '00 models. If the "Maintenance Required" light was added for the '01 facelift, then the 7500 mile interval would have been removed.

The GM, BMW, Mercedes, and other "oil life monitors" actually have a bit of intelligence behind them. Some actually take a reading of the capacitance of the oil. The GM monitor in my '06 Silverado took into account driving conditions, RPM, temperature, etc... it would trigger anywhere from 8000 to 12000.

The Toyota system is just a timer. 4500 miles it flashes, 5000 miles it's on. Unfortunately, even though WE may be able to make an intelligent decision on whether or not we can go longer, our factory warranty and extended warranties do not give us that option.

 

Do it yourself.

Once a year, usually around July, Costco puts their 6-packs on sale with a $10 instant rebate. $26 for 6 quarts.
Add another $4 for a Toyota OEM filter and you're done without worrying if the dealer did the job properly.

I've been doing our oil changes (taco and accord) for a few years now and always find either Mobil 1 (primary choice) or Pennzoil Full Synthetic (Secondary) 5qt jugs for $24.97 in both Texas and Florida. We use 5W-30 on the taco and 5W-20 for the chick's car.

Also the Toyota Filters yzzd's are great! Did that ebay bulk purchase a while back and now I have a bunch standing by for each change. Very nice filter.
Get out there and turn some wrenches and have fun. Screw the dealership oil changes. I've never trusted them since my old man's van blew an engine after they failed to add the new oil back in after a dealership oil change.

 

As long as the dealership is giving me free oil changes it just doesn't make sense not to use them.

 

I am pretty sure the v-6 is coming with regular oil...but when {how many miles} till you can switch over to a full synthetic????

 

It does, and you can dump the factory oil and switch to synthetic on your way home from the dealer if you'd like.

 

I just purchased my 2013 TRD DC Tacoma. I asked the dealership when I was there for my one month check. He said synthetic every 10,000 miles. My BMW's in the past have all been 15K or one year. I thought that was long. But one of me I purchased at 150K miles. I put another 20k on it o problem. My oil fill cap also says synthetic oil. I see no Reno to change more frequently. If anything just change the filter. I did that after 1000 miles. Synthetic works better the longer it it used. Or so I have read.
