So I changed my oil on my own this weekend. Ended up switching from conventional to Castrol GTX 5w-30, high mileage, synthetic blend. Anyone use that and have good experiences with it? If I decide to go full synthetic, would it be ok to just switch to mobil 1 synthetic high mileage next change?

You shouldn't have a problem. I wouldn't keep switching back and forth but you will be fine to switch to it.

    No reason not to.
    The oils are fully compatible.

I can't decide to run valvoline or mobil 1....

The guarantee from valvoline is really tempting

The guarantee is not worth the bottle it's printed on.
You're going to have a hard time proving that your engine failure was due to their oil.

Mobil-1 and Amsoil have similar "guarantees" on their extended-performance products.

Ive been running Amsoil since her first oil change 106,000 miles back. I have a buddy who is a dealer and he lets me have it at his cost. I run it in my Vette also.

I usually only go 5k. I could go longer but I like to keep it at that range.

You can take the used oil back to any automotive shop, Napa, Autozone, ORielly, Advance, and they take it free every time. As much as you can bring them.

Its them recycled into something, generally cleaned and reused in "new oil"

When I bought my truck in Feb, 2013 I found a stack of service records in the glove box, it'd had synthetic it's entire life, of 150k miles at that point, so I figured I'd do myself a favor and continue with it, except go with Castrol instead of Valvoline. It's now got 173k on it, runs quiet as a mouse, no leaks, doesn't smoke, etc. I'd say synthetic, no matter what brand is better than running conventional.

 I drove my 06' off the lot with 20 miles on the odo. I wanted to be sure the rings would seat well and this motor would not "use" much oil, so I ran the factory oil for 1000 miles, changed the oil and filter, ran 5K on that oil change, then changed the oil and filter to Amsoil Signature 100% synth 10w-30 and added Mr. Moly to the oil every oil change since. I never ran the engine above 3000 RPM during the 6K break-in. I ALWAYS change the filter every time the oil gets changed (with an 034 tall Amsoil filter or a Mann filter).

This engine now has 105,000 miles on it. I have been changing the Amsoil once a year which works out to be 15K mile on an oil change. I have decided this year to change the oil every 7500 miles (twice a year) and not let it go so long even though I do not need to add oil between oil changes. Every other car I've owned (over the years) would need a quart added between changes. Break it in right and you'll have no issues later.

Mobil 1. I've used just about every synthetic out there. RP would be my second choice. 99% of people would never know the difference between oils anyhow. It's mostly just a personal preference thing IMO.
