    Not a big fan of part-time 4x4. Unless it's full time 4x4 I don't care really.

Unless you have a really good traction control system I don't think full time 4wd is worth a damn and if it doesn't have a center diff lock it is inferior in the rocks compared to part time 4wd. It's like comparing Atrac to front and rear lockers.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
My last Tacoma was a 4x4 and I had more problems with that truck than all 3 of my Gen 2 ... 4x2 Prerunners.

Stands to reason ... more moving parts ... slower to accelerate ... worse mileage ... so I became a real man :D and bought a Honda 4x4 Ridgeline ...

    Honestly ... I love Toyota trucks ... but if you don't need a 4x4 ... why buy one ? ...

But ... a lot of Tacoma buyers are younger and off roaders ... so a 4x4 is more important to them ...

    With enough speed you don't need 4wd ;) (I'm a locked 2wd guy)

I would have totally purchased a 2wd Taco over the 4wd version if Toyo offered such a Taco with a manual tranny and a V-6 engine and in an access cab form factor....

That might work in sunny southern California, but in snowy northern Utah that will make you go upside down in a ditch just as fast as 2wd with an open diff. Of course, plenty of people here have 4wd and STILL manage to go upside down in a ditch.:) I know people who have lived here their entire lives and still don't understand that a safe driver with 2wd is better in snow and ice than an asshole driver with 4wd!

Wait so 4wd doesn't make my Tacoma impervious to the weather?!

Had a guy roll 3 times in front of my in a Ford Ranger near Tremonton when I was on my way to Park City. He was doing 75 in a snow storm on the unbelievably slick freeway. It was so slick that me and the paramedics and cops almost couldn't even walk on it... his wreck caused 3 more fender benders and about 15 runoffs because everyone else was going too fast as well... hell I almost wrecked my car into him because he rolled right after he passed me... he was driving along and his asss end just walked out from under him... (which makes me thing he wasn't in 4wd actually.)

I'm sure he had his 4wd AND his false sense of security engaged.

Anybody very familiar with Rangers? I can't tell if it has a tcase and you can't really see if it has a front diff or not. I was too caught up in everything to think to look if it was 4wd or not at the time.

    One quick question regarding 4wd.

So I finally found some grass/gravel around here to drive around on, I put my truck into 4hi and it made a fairly loud "clack" but went into 4hi just fine. I had the wheels slightly turned because I was coming out of a left turn, but the wheels were by no means turned significantly.

I proceeded to drive it around switching to 2wd and 4hi, but I no longer heard the noise and everything seemed fine. The very last time I took it out of 4wd I was in reverse and the truck "jumped" a little as it came out.

Is all of this normal? Just asking because I am still shitting yellow when it comes to 4wd vehicles.

... ^^^ ... Mine did some of the same things as I never used the 4x4 before (except on wet grass once) ...

PS ... We might be neighbors ... I am in Sandy Springs ... :D

Sounds pretty normal to me. Sometimes the ADD in the front diff lines up better than other times and can make it clunk or jerk.
