Either way, he had "ice road invincibility syndrome" and was going way too fast for the weather. This syndrome is more common in Hummer, Escalade and Super Duty drivers, but unfortunately anyone can become infected.

    They don't offer manual tranny/V6/AC in a 4x4?

4wd is always good, but it cost more...and more insurance...and more maintenance...and worse gas mileage etc...I went the cheaper route and got a Prerunner being that the clearance is great, load capacity is that of a 4x4, and Toyota is the only company that offers the Prerunner type truck. Plus growing up living in the mountains i've taken a 2wd most places my friends took 4wd's. Now living in the city unfortunately I would rarrrrrely engage 4wd..The money I save goes to all my other hobbies I guess.

He's saying he would've bought a 2wd v6 manual access cab if it was offered I think.

I bought my 4wd when I moved up to the CO/WY areas, it's pretty essential. Meanwhile, my brother who lives in Dallas drives a 2wd Wrangler

Ok great. I guess I'm a little paranoid...lack of knowledge seems to do that to me. I'm used to knowing the ins and outs of everything I own. Part of being an autodidact I guess.

If I had wanted a 2wd I would have had to special order it. They're that rare up here in Vermont. Mine is a DD and 2wd in the winter can be done but 4wd is just so much better. If I was somewhere that never got snow, I'd have gotten 2wd. That's why I was curious as to the distribution of 2wd vs 4wd.

I have never used chains, but I did have a couple of 100# concrete blocks that went over the axel when I drove a 2wd pickup. And yes, "icy road invulnerability" is a problem here as well. When we used to carpool 45 minutes each way, a buddy of mine and I used to keep track of the 4wd vehicles off the road in the winter.

... ^^^ ... When I lived in Quebec and drove down to VT, NH, Maine and etc ... sometimes I drove a Subaru Wagon that never got stuck ... :D ... even when I was run off the road down (down a steep grade) in a creek bed ditch. ...

i liked that homely looking Subaru Wagon (with hidden cyclops grill light) better than my old CJ-5 and CJ-7 for snow & ice highway driving ... :)

4wd's can do that too ;)

Not the best pic of his rig, but the only one I could find flexing the frontend.
