How brutal of a job should splitting engine from tranny be?

    Hi everyone.

    I'm trying to do a clutch replacement on my 2000 Tacoma 4x4, 2.7l 5sp.

I just got those last two hard-to-reach 17mm bolts out of the top of the bell housing (which was supposed to be my big victory), but now as I try to pull the transmission/transfer case assembly rearward, I can't get anything to budge. It's as solid as it was when it was bolted together. I've shook and pulled as much as i can while laying on my back on the garage floor and get nothing.

Any hints? I can't detect any separation between the engine and bell housing. Should I put a block of wood against the transfer case and beat it with a sledge? Could I have the transmission jack too high or low? I don't want to screw anything up.

    Thanks for any help/tips.

Just to be sure, you have two bolts on top, and several others that are hard to locate, especially around the clutch slave cylinder. I assume you have unbolted the starter. You also have to look just above the slave cylinder, and you will find a bolt that is kind of hidden there are well.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

It appears I missed the bolt right above the slave cylinder.

    Appreciate the help.

Was just about to suggest that. I did the same thing. Three top bolts really.

Now get a jack under it because its falling out.......:p

For an auto R&R theres 1 bolt that takes about 4+ft of extension with a swivel at the end... Toyota hides there junk well:)

If its the same bolt i'm thinking of, i tried that monte but couldn't get the right length of extension plus no air ratchet so had to go all the way back to tail shaft & remove, it was pretty easy actually just extremely weird...

Before I commence with today's reefing, I'd like to ask you all if all 6 (per FSM) of the engine to tranny bolts are 17mm heads.

I have accounted for 4 17mm bolts (the two top, hard-to-reach bolts requiring obnoxious extension combos, the one above the slave cylinder pointed out to me, and finally the long one on the passenger side that also secures the exhaust pipe brace.)

Are the remaining two mounting bolts the longer of the 14mm head bolt/nut combos which I already have removed?

If after all this time searching around the bellhousing I have missed two more 17mm bolts, I'm giving up and bicycling the rest of my life.

P.S. I did take off the starter motor/bolts.

    Thanks again for the help.

When I did mine I removed all the bolts but still had a hell of a time getting it apart. It felt like there was an extra bolt on there but it was really because the alignment dowels had a bit of corrosion on them. I wrestled with it for more time than I'd like to admit! Getting it a part was a pain, but putting it back together was a piece of cake.

Whoa, that brought back some bad memories... getting those top two bolts in gave me fits.

Some of this Some of that
Definitely more than 4 bolts, I'm an auto but I used a 1/2 drive swivel 17mm socket with a bunch of extensions to get them, pita. At least you don't have to unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate, that's annoying

Can somebody tell me whether the new throwout bearing assembly is correctly installed? Some beer may have caused me to forget the original orientation of the clip.

I assume when everything is back together that the clutch will hold the fork/bearing tight, but the clip, as installed, seems excessively rattle-y.

    Here's a video I just made:

What kind of clutch did you install? Looks like an F1? Hows it holding up/acting? Mine's starting to slip, i'll be in your shoes not too long from now.
