I need some help choosing an optic with rings. If will be put on a Mosin Nagant 91/30, mounted on a Brass Stacker's mount. Eventually, I might get a wild hair across my ass and actually buy the Archangel stock but that's a ways off, for now it's a standard Mosin with a free floated barrel. Price is a concern, I don't want to spend $300 on a scope for a $100 rifle. So, can anyone recommend me a decent quality budget scope for this thing? Obviously, not looking top of the line with my budget. I'm looking for inexpensive but would like to avoid something cheap if that makes sense.

 

I've been continuously researching and might actually go with a pistol scope. I need a scout scope because of the long eye relief and most of the decent ones don't seem to be within what I'm willing to spend. Some of the OK pistol scope seem to offer the eye relief needed and the prices aren't bad. My other option is to buy the NcStar scout scope offered on Brass Stacker's website.

 

Check out the Weaver Classic K-series 4x scout. I don't know anything about Mosins, but a friend has one on a Ruger Scout and a Mosin. I've never fired the Mosin but have shot the Ruger extensively..it's a nice little scope for the money.

 

It's a tough call on optics and rings/mounts when you don't want to drop a lot of cash. Such a vital piece of the puzzle.

 

I hear ya! Especially when the firearm itself is so cheap. If it were a $1,000 rifle, then I'd feel better about dropping some coin into it but this one is dirt cheap, very old and just for dinking around with. It'll be a range gun typically shot at 100 yards but will stretch it's legs to 300 yards whenever I get the opportunity. I know it's not an easy question, I'm looking for inexpensive but don't want to waste my money on something cheap that won't work.

I checked out the Weaver scope you mentioned, thanks for the idea! It seems to run in the $200 range and has a long eye relief that I need. Seems to have great reviews also, 5 out of 5 on Midway.

 

Look for good deals or even used deals on Leupold or Nikon shotgun/scout type scopes such as the 1-4X models. They are long eye relief. Or even a used 4X. Those companies will honor the warranty and repair them even if second or third hand.

 

Good to know about the warranty. I have been keeping an eye out for used glass on a local gun forum but they don't come up too often. One popped up today for $2,500


I'm definitely not going with the NcStar scope, the more I dug, the more horrible reviews I read. Most of the reviews I read ended with the reviewer dismounting the scope and using it as the target while using iron sights

 

Interesting. I like the options. Honestly, I likely won't change the stock, I really like the old wood look so the only way I'm giving it up is for the Archangel

That scout scope is dirt cheap though... for the price, it's almost too hard to pass up and it comes with the rubber recoil pad which I was going to purchase anyways. I think I'd still buy the brass stackers mount though, I don't know how that other one is mounting up but I want a good, solid mount or the scope will be shit.

 

I don't want to mess with the original bolt so a rear mount scope is out for me. I'm not real keen on a scope that mounts to the stock (which is what i was thinking that mounts to but I could be wrong). Maybe I'll get that kit first, see what's in it and how it mounts and buy the Brass Stacker kit if I don't like it. For $50, hard to go wrong.

I had a friend who tapped his and put a side mount on it with a curved bolt. I've got a 1937 91/30 myself and I've gotten so use to the Irons myself that im just gonna keep it as an infantry weap. I think I got a good one tho that was sighted in pretty decent. Not sure if http://62x54r.net has any info on scoping, but they were awesome about telling me what the markings on my nagant meant back in the day.

I have seen the "Scout Scope" too that mounts to the rear sight post.

 

I've been poking around that forum a bit also I don't want to tap the receiver like you have to with the stock sniper scope or similar. I would prefer to have the ability to return it to completely stock if necessary. That's why I'm pretty set on the Brass Stackers mount because of how it mounts and can be reversed easily.

 

If you are going budget, look at fixed power scopes.
Try to buy a scope based on lens quality and construction rather than features.

 

I'm a big fan of Weaver and their higher quality offerings, and would probably choose the 4x that I suggested earlier, but this is a cheaper option that I know people like to put on their Mosins. Variable and a much longer eye relief(8"-13").

Damn, that one seems perfect! I don't know how I didn't see that one. I spent an hour on Midway and Optics Planet last night comparing scopes, reading reviews, etc. I can't believe that neither sight has a sort feature that lets you filter the long eye relief scopes!

 

I was looking at BSA a lot last night. Their pricing seems decent for what they are and they seemed to have a good overall rating. That one in particular doesn't have a very long eye relief so it wouldn't work for the mount I want to use.

 

Just try searching "scout scope." I'll try find a couple more when I have time, but that should narrow your search down to what you're looking for.

 

I've been searching scout scopes and also pistol scopes. Some of the red dot scopes are neat also but tend to be lower magnification. I might head to Bass Pro this weekend and check out some of their scopes in person. Nothing like actually being able to physically see the scope, even if I don't end up buying from them.
