Full Time 4WD mod?

Would it be possible to install a locking transfer case from a 4runner in a Tacoma so you could get Full Time 4WD or AWD for added traction on pavement?

The crux of it would be computability between the transmissions and transfer cases.

 

what kind of pavement are u losing traction on, and 4 hi is good for a decent speed on bad traction areas, i had my tundra in 4 hi driving on a snow covered interstate going 55 passing everyone in the non snow covered lane, had no problems

 

It would be more for wet pavement or rock where you'd get alot of bind if you had 4 HI.

 

The only time you would be getting bind in 4wd HI is if you made a super tight turn.

 

AWD is a lot more complicated than just 'locking' the transfer case or even the diffs.

AWD vehicles are specially and specifically designed to run on dry pavement, slip when needed & can transfer power to other wheels that don't have traction.

Various auto makers have their systems setup in various ways and a lot of electronics are involved also.

Honestly, if it were that easy.....our trucks would already have AWD. I'm sure that's not far on the horizon.

 

What you've described how an active AWD systems work. Most of those are essentially open front, rear, and center and use braking similar to Auto LSD to control traction.

The 4 Runners always have a solid link to the rear, but have an lsd from the transfer case to the front diff. The lsd can then be locked for lower traction situations making it the same as a Part Time 4WD vehicle.

 

Well, not all the 4runners, but the V8 4WD ones.
