Constructively...Even tac-welded. That steel square tubing-structure is warped. probably due to the uneven ground. This is huge in the handling of anything you will drive on the street. Secondly. you are creating more work by running this raw steel through the elements...beginning the oxidation process.. This means it will be extremely hard to primer effectively with acid primer given the steel is contaminated by the elements...oil...grime...dirt...etc. Thirdly...The use of the square tubing as the connecting member to the frame from the above-frame is subject to its thickness....1/8" thick or so.. it appears. Meaning... the cross-sections of the bracket you made from square... could cave-in laterally causing your sub-frame or "square tubing thing" to be no more effective than a regular bed.

Constructively. Honest.

Will a mod please remove this users post from my thread I do not need negativity in it. I would like a clean drama free thread. It is not warped at all you can't tell from pics and I also have access to a large sand blaster so I'm not worried about Minor rust.

Not being rude or starting a pissing match. But what did you expect? It's the interwebz for a reason. It's a public thread on a public site with public people. He is simply stating his opinion on the subject and trying to be professional about it. I didn't see anywhere where he said anything to put your project down or say it was worthless. He gave you an opinion of what he would do.

Fore is right. I drive the same public roads you drive as do others. Last thing I want is a weld to break on your bed and it destroy my truck or someone elses. Most of us have spent considerable amounts of money on our trucks and don't need them messed up.

Now for my criticism on your build. I know nothing at all about welding. But I do know a weld put on something at an angle or slope that gets pulled on when that surface is level again will fail. Everything being welded has to be exactly where it is intended to be for the life of the weld. Welds do not flex they break. So if you weld something that is angled because your truck is not level. Think of what will happen when the weight of your bed is put on unevenly. Or even possibly evenly but that weld is off.

 

The truck should be on level ground during the fabrication phase. You don't need to back track much. Keep up the hard work. Its going to be really cool when you're done. People will give you information on here that you may not want to hear but its just to help you out. Dont want you wasting your time or money on reworking something.

OK I'm sorry if I got a little pissy but I never said it wasn't welded on level ground. It was built in a shop wasn't welded by me is not being driven just tacked and will be finished by a professional welder. This all started by some a hole assuming I did shorty work.... I understand people have opinions but damn. Oh and for the record he did out down my work. Please can we drop the petty bs...

Dude, I just saw this thread & responded but trust me... I am hands down THE shittiest welder in the western world at least... oddly I'm a fantastically skilled grinder ... go figure...

 

Same here that's why I leave the welding to the pros apparently what people can't see in the pics is all the bracing the thing is built like a jigsaw puzzle and once the top deck is in place and welded in place it's not going anywhere.

My truck now the least of people's worries considering all the mud trucks around here I'd be more worried about one of those coming apart

 

So made a lot of progress but have been too busy to post plus I forget. Anyway since some people gave me crap about welding I decided to be come certified haha I graduate from school in June. Anyone have anything to say about me welding now? I'll be posting pics soon but beds don't lights done fenders on. Its getting there slowly. Hopefully going to paint soon.

 

I had a friend ask me about this and I didn't know where to look for these, can you direct me to where I can buy one?

Is it legal for the tires to be uncovered like that? Looks good though.

 

I asked a few Jacksonville officers and they said it's not a problem at all. Haven't had any trouble from police got pulled over once turned out he liked it and wanted a better look haha

 

Lol cool. Personnally i would put some sort of mudd flap to keep from throwing rocks but otherwise thats pretty cool.
