drum brake rust

Having just put new wheels on and looking at them frequently, I have noticed some rust on the back (drum) brakes. Is this normal? I researched and found that it shouldn't affect the braking, since that happens on the inside of the drum, but was just curious if this is anything to worry about and if it's typical.

I wonder, since the braking occurs on the inside if these could be cleaned up and painted to prevent this rust. Has anyone done this and do you have pictures? (I did a search and found a lot about painting calipers or switching drum brakes to disc, but nothing about the rust or painting the drum).

It may not be THAT noticeable to most people or from a distance, but it bugs me (almost as much as the stupid suspension squeak...). Here are some pictures:

Yeah....Sand it down or use a chemical rust cleaner and spray some paint on there- Brake caliper paint or normal paint would work too.

I shot mine with a coat of black when the tires were off for paint. Not a huge deal-It's going to happen. As far as the squeak- Take it to the dealer and get them to grease it up or put anti-friction pads in there.

Nope...Covered the body paint with some newspaper and sprayed carefully...

 

use a paint that has rust inhibitors such as Rustoleum or Krylon Rust Tough. a "high heat" variety wouldn't be a bad idea either.
