Colin or any of you guys with winches and knowledge of them, I have a question. Colin I was going to post this in the bs thread, but figured there's more knowledge to be found here so hopefully you don't mind.

My question is, without using a hill to assist with keeping tension on the line, what's another good method for respooling the winch line? I was thinking if work stays slow today I would bring it in and fix the line and tighten the bolt that holds the line on the drum, but wasn't sure how the best way to respool it after that would be. Thanks guys, and again Colin, I can delete this if you don't want me cluttering up your thread.

Hook it too a tree or another object, put truck in N and gently apply the brakes to keep tension on it whilst respooling.

This! If I'm by myself I'll set a click or two of parking brake.

I was thinking that but wasn't sure. I am thinking about having my shop foreman park his truck in the shop and hooking to it. Then I will sit inside mine and lightly apply the brakes. Thanks for the response.

these fine gents seem to have you covered. remember to properly direct the line as is spools. easiest way to do this is stand at the midpoint (between the truck and what it's attached to) and lean into the line from either side with your hip.

Once I got the line back on the winch yesterday I was able to spool it back very nice. I actually don't want to take it off because it will mess that up, but I have to to fix the eyelet and tighten the bolt properly. It's only hand tight right now, which might still be tighter than it was before I started yesterday. That's one of the only complaints I have heard about my winch is the bolt being loose from the factory, I should have checked that before starting yesterday. That's my own fault.

also, after seeing this amazing video, i was hooked. I've been into higher end RCs for years, so i knew what was going to happen as soon as i saw the video. something like what's used in the video ranges from $400 - $700 though, so i picked up the micro version to practice with before i make the big investment,

the big ones use a gopro, but this little one has a built in camera. it's unfortunately been real windy since i picked the thing up, so flying over 20 feet off the ground gets real sketchy with the little one. was able to get some testing/practice in today though and snapped a quick picture.

it doesn't count if you're in a real helicopter. but looking forward to what you have

it makes noise for sure, but nothing too obnoxious. it's along the lines of white noise. no whistles or howling.

I do want to build a new roof rack, but it's because my needs/uses have changed since i built this one, not because it's a bad rack. i'm thinking of doing one that's a little wider for better roof line protection, and one that doesn't have sides. the sides are great if you want to toss a bunch of random stuff up there, but they limit the hauling options. building one without the sides is like having a flatbed compared to a standard pickup bed.

My racks follow the gutter lines which get wider at the front and are relatively quiet like yours. I built one for a friend recently that was a touch wider than 48" to clear an entire sheet of plywood etc. Not sure if it's the contour, windshield width etc but his is annoying as hell. Can't hardly use the Bluetooth phone at 40mph.
We added insulators, deflectors and no real improvement. Just something to consider.
