Replacing Driveshaft

2009 DC Pre-runner ~2600 miles

Noticed a couple spots of fluid on my driveway so I took it to the dealership yesterday. Tranny fluid is dripping from the slip yoke so they ordered a new driveshaft. At least that is what I was told. Took it back today to do the swap.

Hopefully all goes well.

 

Did you feel any vibration?

Eschmunk - have you crawled underneath your truck and looked at this leak yourself? Can you pinpoint where it came from?

If they replace the driveshaft - I'll be AMAZED if the problem actually goes away.

 

I have seen, heard and experienced so many dealers who are quick to replace stuff unrelated to the problem because it is covered under warranty. It keeps their shop workers busy and is all paid by the company.

Like the hidden videos of the guys bashing wrecked cars with hammers to make more work for their shop and getting the insurance company to cover the tab. Only dealers are doing it legally. Shame...

 

Something very very fishy. I can't imagine them doing something like that though, the entire tranny is surely covered under warranty. Even seals right?

 

I was thinking that it was probably a seal. I have looked under the truck myself and there is a drip coming off the driveshaft u joint near the tranny. I will keep an eye on it and take it back for sure if it keeps leaking.

 

My drive shaft is being replaced on my '08 Reg Cab 4x4 as I write this. Should be ready by Friday. I developed a sporadic vibration at highway speeds about 8,000 miles ago that slowly got louder over time until I took it in on Monday @ 27,000 miles. Everything was covered by warranty. No leaks associated with vibration, though...

I live in Austin, TX and the shaft resides somewhere in Canada I would prefer they UPS it to my house so I could put it in myself but my workmanship would not be covered by warranty.

it probably is the rear seal... i had a drop there last week and took in to my dealer and they replaced the seal with no questions asked, all under the powertrain warranty

 

Don't the 2WD 4-cyl Tacos have a slip joint between driveshaft and 5-spd tranny? The service manual requires that a service tool be inserted into the tranny rear end (where driveshaft goes) to prevent oil leakage during driveshaft removal. Perhaps the driveshaft front yoke has some oil sealing feature?
