You know someone that could do the fab work? That's what is really holding me back right now is that I don't have the skills or welder to do it. That's why I'm waiting on Jerry but he seems to be to busy.

 

He says hes got a cousin that can possibly do it

 

oh realyz??? What has he done in the past? I would possibly be interested in getting it done now if we could. The guy selling the mini isn't actively trying to sell it so I would have some time to save up or get a little loan for it later on. Who is your cousin that would possibly be able to do it?

I know a guy out here near sac that has a shop...he does some very very good work. And he is super cheap. He will be doing my slider install soon. LMK bro. He actually did my ADD install without having to drop the front diff, which is suggested on install

 

Hey whats up scotty, its glen, I met u at the last bamf mod day. Anyways, 2 things, first off 510's are sick. I had 2 of them when I was younger, a 1972, my first car ever and a 70 with dual webbers and a sss head. Fun little cars. And second, try out my guy George of swat customs in freemont. He does some pretty trick stuff.

Yeah a 510 would be most ideal if it was in this shape and price as the mini but either one I would rock as a DD for a good long while. I hate though that there is SO much temptation in doing more stuff to the Mini once I get it. Vtec swap AWD conversion etc. etc. but it already has a 1.3L SPI engine from a 90-95 in it. The first thing I read about that engine is people converting it back to a carb and that opens up a whole new can of worms. I think I would end up going that route for a while and not dropping 10k into a new motor and front sub-frame, lol, I love working on cars but it gets so damn expensive when you have the taste I have...

 

FWIW, What's the point of getting a DD if it's an older car that you want to work on and convert? I would think a DD would be a reliable, good mpg, economical car. To me carbureted motors aren't worth it for a DD, especially when they get old and you have to tune/re-jet them.

IMHO, I would think a late 90s to early 00's import Honda or toyota would be a great DD.

 

they get around 30+ mpg city and any parts for it are readily available online for cheap. Your right though I should put the 2001+ K20 motor in it and get the best of both worlds, great looking car and super reliable motor and a 190hp engine in a 1700lb car....

I want a 70 Wagon so fucking bad but all i can find on CL is a sedan for 4500 thats not running

If i could find a 510 wagon in okay shape thatll be my new project until its DD status then dump some money into the Tacoma suspension wise.
Dont think a gas guzzling v8 is right for me right now.

 

510 wagons weren't all that common-or in demand. Pretty cool car tho. Good luck finding one!

If you want it - then get it. An original mini would be cool

But do NOT kid yourself that you're doing it to SAVE MONEY. Yeah, you might drop fewer sheckles on gas. But between cash initial outlay, insurance, maintenance, required repairs, and the mods that also seem to be singing a siren song into your ears -- well, neither your monthly "car" budget overall, nor your "tacoma mod budget" will be thanking you for making this purchase.

Short answer: do it if you want to - but do it with eyes wide open and don't kid yourself. This is NOT the path of spending less money.

 

Keep looking. You might find one.
