My wife and I just spent the last 6 months finding a place to build our new house. I have been all over the area and I can tell you that Ruskin and Palmetto are a bit on the not so nice side. The schools are bad too if you have kids. I wouldn't recommend Parish either. The nice area there is Apollo Beach but there is a massive garbage dump you can see from anywhere in the town and sulfur mines there that smell. If you're going to live down that way your best bet is Sarasota or Bradenton. It's more expensive but you get what you pay for. After looking down there for months we decided on leaving Clearwater and are building a home north in Spring Hill. Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and Land O Lakes are really nice but north of where you mentioned by about an hour.

Where you from in NJ? I spent some time in Freehold.

Tampa Bay member here, you guys already knew that though! Missed my black Tacoma so much, I picked this girl up. Single cab, 6 foot bed, 2003 PreRunner. Got it for a price that you can't usually find the 5 luggers for. It is not perfect, but it is in very good condition. 5000 bucks, 130k on the clock and a few scratches on the bed. Ordering 5100s with eibachs and looking for wheels and tires as we speak.

    Interesting info, thanks for sharing!!

The north side of Tampa seems nice but we are trying to stay on the south side. Can you recommend any areas of Bradenton to live? Seems like that area has much older homes and I've read there are some bad areas to be careful of. I hear Sarasota is nice but if I locate a job in Tampa, the ride seems like it would be long. (I hear Tampa traffic is brutal, all though I doubt it can compete with NJ.)

I live in South Brunswick, NJ which is about 40 minutes North of Freehold. Looking forward to getting out of here and back down to Florida. (Spent 2 years in the Jacksonville area.)

Any additional info is greatly appreciated!

It all depends on where you'll be working, the south side of Tampa to the more northern side of Sarasota isn't a bad drive, I personally make the drive many times. East bradenton, closer to Lakewood ranch is nice, and not ghetto.

Yea, that's the mystery. I've tried applying but most places want you to be local or they won't even consider you for the job. So I can only try to find a home centrally located, so that whatever I find after I get down there, won't be a killer drive. I've been doing a lot of military work over the years and was hoping to get something on Macdill AFB, but with all the budget cuts and the hiring freeze, it's not looking good.

Done! I actually tint the front windshield in EVERY car I own. I found a guy that is willing to do it if I pay cash and no warranty. He does great work. I've been using him for 15 years on every vehicle I get.
