Highways aren't "I-xx" or "Highway-xx"... if the road is known by a number, it's "the-xx" (and don't say that's just California, I hear it from other parts of the country on XM Traffic).
If a highway has a number, but also a single-word street name, it is normally known by the name.
Hwy 90 is Imperial, Hwy 83 is Euclid, Hwy 39 is Beach Blvd (and after it jogs, it becomes Azusa, then Asuza Canyon, even though Caltrans calls it 39 in the canyon).
Basically we use numbers for freeways. If bicycles and pedestrians can use it, we call it by name.
There are a few highways in the Bay area that are known by the name even though they might be 3 or 4 words, but that's rare.

We won't go "to the main strip"... We'd go "downtown", "the mall", or just name the store itself like "Swensen's" or "Farrell's"

 

Seriously. Does everyone really think ALL of Canada has the same accent? Look at how many accents we have and think about it
