The City MPG is rated 2mpg lower? I can't really remember. The dam EPA people must really hot rod those manuals, haha.

Lower RPM's does not always equal more MPG.
What is the OD ratio for the AT vs. MT?

I belive the manual has a .83 OD, while the Auto has a .75 OD...

True, but all else is the same in these trucks so lower RPM in the same engine for the same vehicle is going to me less gas burned.

Thanks chris. I don't know what it is without researching it. lol

I prefer manual 6 speed baby. Wish they made the dc long bed with a stick that would be sick. I would buy for sure.

i've always had manual transmissions in all my cars....i dunno why...i just like them better...like you can let off the gas and the truck will gradually slow down without hitting the brakes...good for coasting while a red light is up ahead then it turns green before you get there and you never had to use the brakes at all...in an auto you let off the gas and it keeps going like if you are going down a slight hill or something so you are forced to use the brakes alot more in an auto....plus i don't like the autos in tacomas...in the floor...it would be better if it was up on the column...i dunno...just a personal thing...i could understand having an auto in a big truck like the tundra but for a 4 cylinder 4x4 tacoma i prefer a manual tranny

ya, i presonally have never owned an auto, love the 6 speed, very easy in the truck but i am used to stage 3 clucthces and short shifters, so this is like nursery school, also , shifting is always more fun, going 40 in 6th gear runnin 1200 rpm is great way to save gas

For the trails i prefer a standard, shift when you want to. In addition its also funner, comming from booth sides.

Driving a manual in stop and go traffic sucks, its an automatics only advantage. With a manual, you have more control of the engine. You can drive it harder, and baby it more. Manuals usually have more usable power too, less power loss in the drive train which really helps in small motors.

Im gettin ready to move to a bigger city with more traffic and hills so a manual would just be a pain in the ass.

Will show my age here BUT my days of "Stick" are almost over....I was taught on Twin Sticks so shifting used to be "Fun"....The taco 5 spd will give great mpg's ( '99 was fun) BUT when I went to trade up to the '02 ,auto only....it gets the same mpg locally that the "stick" did because I DON'T rabbit ;)......My "Mack Office" even has an Allison 6 speed and even with the 427 "Puppy" under the hood ,good mpg's can be gathered by driving habits....
Driver preference is what it is all about......I love my allison but would not miss a chance to create with our 18 speeds either and that is why the Taco is auto.....the drive home must be fun and simple.....
