5 seconds then cutting off

in summary : truck was running fine - blew head gasket - had head machined by machine shop - replaced head gasket as well as many other gaskets - got it all back together - truck back to running fine - 5 seconds after start up warm or cold start it dies - no gurgling sounds, no bogging down just starts up idles fine then OFF - when this happens the check engine light comes on - I took it to the auto zone and advanced auto stores and they said my trucks diagnostic plug is too old and is the OBD one plug which they do not carry - SO .. as long as I hold the idle at about 1k rpm for about 15 or 20 seconds I can let off the gas and it runs/idles fine - power is normal take off is normal and idle is normal - just the 5 seconds after staring it dies if I do not hold the idle up for a bit ... things that make me go hmmmmm -- any help would be much appreciated ... i had that same problem with my 93 yota it turned out i had my distributer in wrong i dont know what he did but thats what he said hope this helps
