    Excellent information Adam. What do you think of Teak?

    My plan is to clean up all the metal, primer it and then paint it. All hardware bolts and nuts will be SS.

    I believe the old wood was oak but only 3/4 in thick. I might want to try 1" thick if it will fit.

    Teak would be great, but I didn't suggest it because it is about 8X more expensive than white oak. It is terribly expensive.

    You could go with 1" and may just have to trim the end of it down to 3/4" to get it to fit in the ends. You could taper it or dado it. 1" would be more sturdy.

    I have not priced out wood but 8X the expense makes it not doable. White oak it is. I will start to look at real lumber yards this coming week. Will probably take 3 to 4 days for the painting. I like to let paint dry for a day before moving on from primer to final top coat.

    Do you have a planer? I typically buy rough cut wood and i get it for about 1/3 of the price i can get it from lumber yards. There are a few guys around here that cut and mill lumber and I get it for about $2/bf. If i were to get it from the lumber yards, i would pay $4-$8/bf.
