    You'll see the RC guys who own quads and hexas an octos call them drones or even UAVs... But they are far from it. Modern UAVs are autonomous systems.

    You control your phantom from an Rc transmitter which essentially makes it an RC toy just like an RC plane or Heli. Part of the problem with this industry is the misperception of it by most people...

    The UAV part throws me off, because by definition, these are unmanned aerial vehicles.

    i would call the autonomous ones AAVs, similar to how we call autonomous subs/robots AUVs in the marine industry, not UUVs.

    does it fall into the "UAV" category if i get the upgraded GPS system that allows me to set autopilot routes?

    Ya it's a little convoluted from how you know UUVs and AUVs... And yes, once you can send waypoints, I would be more inclined to call it something closer to uav but definitely not drone since the perception of that word gets pretty stupid here in the US.

    LTAs have key value and I've seen tethered aerostats do amazing things... The US Gov from time to time will actually fund development of LTAs for a few years before defunding it completely (the cycle happens every 10-15 years).
