The reason I ask is because a gun for concealment will likely NOT be something comfortable or something you want to run 1000rds through. I woud HIGHLY suggest planning to send off the paperwork to get your CCW permit when you finish that course. Do it that day and don't waste any time because otherwise you'll put it off and won't get around to it. Keep in mind that this process takes months so if you think you might want one someday do it right away and by the time you get it back you'll have wanted it for a month or two most likely. All that being said, if you think you might want to conceal carry this firearm I would get something small & lightweight. The smaller and more lightweight it is the less likely you will be to leave it at home someday because it's too bulky and the best firearm is the one you have on you when you need it. In that respect I would look at like a .380 or 9mm depending on what you wear or how you plan to carry. We've got several pocket guns in .380 and then several different sizes & layouts in 9mm depending on what you want to wear or what the weather conditions present. This is a very complex question if you want to genuinely help someone and the best advice I can give is to check out a lot of different things and don't buy the cheapest just because it's cheap. I carry either a Shield or XDs as primary in the summer and a Glock (usually 19) in the winter, all in 9mm. I generally carry a Ruger LCP (.380) as a backup gun in my front pocket in a pocket holster. Not saying those are best for YOU personally because everyone is different but that will give you an idea some things to check out. If a Glock 'points' well for you then consider yourself lucky because it's probably the most reliable, cheapest and most accurate out-of-the-box handgun you can buy. For some it doesn't 'point' well and in that case something with a different grip angle would be required. H&K comes to mind as lots of people that can't 'point' a Glock well will like the grip angle of the H&K. Be prepared to spend about 2x more in that case though that's why I advise people to check out a Glock first. Pick one up with both hands like you're going to fire it (don't worry too much about grip right now) and then pick a small object a ways away. Now quickly present your firearm on target w/o sighting it in. Without moving anything slowly lower your head to the sights and see where it 'points' for you. If you're on target or near it then you've found a handgun that points well for you. If it's high or low then you need to move to something with a different grip angle. People will talk about comfort and features and blah blah blah... truth is if this firearm could be something you might carry or use for self defense someday that's the most important thing right there other than reliability and capacity. The rest won't matter in a real life SD situation.

Not thanks to a little thing called auditory exclusion. Your hearing won't be damaged and you likely won't hear a 'bang' at all should you ever be in a real life self defense situation. Besides, in most cases you're talking as little as a 2% difference in measured decibels so that will be the least of your concerns. Don't buy a firearm based on perceived audible differences.

Yep, it's called Auditory Exclusion and while the effects are still largely unknown research has proven that it will save your hearing. It applies to all your sense too and not just hearing but your mind will focus on important items when you are fighting for your life. Your finite motor skills go out the door so that's why you need to be able to 'point' a firearm well & practice practice practice to make your motions and moves muscle memory. You don't rise to the occasion you fall back to training so that's why repetition is so important.

Ear Pro (along with eyes) when you have time to prepare should ALWAYS be worn.

Anyone need a free digital multi-meter? It's Harbor Freight but the price is right and it's nice to have plenty of spares if you tinker with electronics. FWIW I've had a Harbor Freight multi-meter for almost 20 years now and it still works fine. I also have had expensive multi-meters fail so while generally you get better reliability with expensive stuff that's not always the case and for free... well you can't beat it.

Holy Shit! That is my old rig. The guy got rid of the 35's while in FoCo because they kept getting slashed. Considering I sold it over 10 years ago with about 70k miles on it he did not drive it too much more. I saw it once last year in Conifer driving along a road that parallels 285. Interesting though based on the description all he did was drive this thing. He made no changes or improvements from when I had it.

Solid advise on all parts Ost. Thank you. We are going to Cabela's tonight so she can get some hands on with quite a few different guns. I plan to CC my XDm 3.5" for now and build up the arsenal in the future. We still have some work with her on confidence and being comfortable to carry. She will get there so I will drop both of our applications for permit in as soon as we are done with the class.

You say work on her confidence... has her only shooting been with you as the instructor to this point?

Why they require a credit card for zero US dollars is beyond me but I've done these free shipped items from HF before and it's legit... just a wonky way that their web interface requires CC info for an order. One can never have too many multi-meters laying around. I've got some $200 multi-meters and clamps but I still reach for the $20 HF (what I paid for it a couple of decades ago) most of the time because if it craps out... oh well. I'm trying to get it to crap out to be honest but this sucker just takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

To me, this is one of those items EVERYONE should own. Just because you don't know how to use it doesn't mean it won't be useful someday if you take a few minutes to figure out how. A few minutes invested on YouTube will give you everything you need to now to get headed in the right direction and could save you hundreds or possibly even thousands on expensive tech house calls moving forward. Basic trouble shooting of electronics generally is all you need to know how to proceed.

I am really glad I was sub'd to this thread to take advantage of the meter :). I am an aircraft electrician and somehow never took the time to buy myself a good meter. Now I have a free one to use on the truck.

How do you come by these coupon codes for free items?

I took these Saturday. Probably somewhere between 8500'-9000'. Looks like sometime this week or this coming weekend will be the best colors.

LOL! No not just me. She got an introduction by Austin (on here) while he was at Blue Core. Also she took a basics class at Blue Core. We have gone a couple of times with Friends to shoot. Some of them had smaller 9mm and 22's which she liked, but at the moment the only gun we have is the XDm 40 and it has a bit too much kick for her. Hence why I am looking at 9mm or 380. Personally I feel the 22 would not be the best PD weapon.

She gets more confident each time we go. You can tell how she steps up to the lane and prepares. I think the CCW class will be good for her not so much in skill and handling but give her the entire sense of what it will mean to conceal carry, what is legal / what is not, and more range time with a teacher showing additional tips.
I got one of these free last year. In typical HF fashion it lasted a couple of months and then died. But as with most things HF...sometimes you luck out and get a good, long lasting tool and other times you return it in a week. :)
