For your first handgun... I'd suggest a Ruger model 22/45.

Does anybody have any experience with a Remington 788, good/bad comments? I've found one locally for $450 in .223 with a brand new Pentax Gameseeker II 3x9x40 Accuplex scope. I think he said around $350 without the scope. I've been wanting a .223 bolt, but not really wanting to pay what some of these people want for a mini 14. It seems like a decent gun, but I'm just not familiar with this model/this scope or their worth.

the scope base on that looks pretty damn tall and seems like it would be hard to get a proper cheek weld.

How do you like it? Obviously, it's a fairly inexpensive scope but I'm looking at doing something similar (Brass Stackers mount and weighing my options for a scope)

    Same here.

Was thinking about using my mosin for deer this year (don't have a deer rifle) but I'm debating taking my mint, numbers matching '34 hex into the woods..

Im no scope expert but the Aim Sports works well for my mosin. I like the adjustable magnification, and the long eye relief is perfect for the forward mounted brass stacker mount. Probably put 200 rounds through the mosin yesterday (I can hardly move my right arm today), and the rifle stayed zeroed.

Only thing that is annoying the is high cheek/chin weld with the brass stacker mount. Im thinking of getting the arch angel stock for the mosin because it lets you use detachable mags, adjustable cheek rest and stock, and allows you to mount a bipod.

I want that stock soooo bad! I'm having trouble justifying the money on a relatively cheap gun though... I've been keeping my eye out for one to come up cheap though.

my justification is, the mosin is a beautiful gun that I want to keep and preserve for a long time, however, after 3 shoots in the desert, I can see the wear and tear on the wood stock already. Also, I dont want to chop up the beautiful wood stock to put in a swivel stud to mount a bipod, and I dont want to bubba the butt stock to heighten the cheek weld, so the arch angel stock is perfect because it can handle the abuse of dirt and solvents, and has adjustable cheek weld and bipod mount. And detachable mags are nice because the mag well of a factory Mosin eats up my fingers when I reload.

Like my SKS, I kept the wood stock, preserving and protecting it, and abusing the gun like it should with a nice polymer stock kit.

me too, honestly. I have their AK mags and they havent let me down yet, although they are a little wobbly compared to my tapco mags which dont wobble at all. I saw a bunch of reviews and stuff for the arch angel stock and I'm pretty sold on it.

Or any trajectories for that matter. I am not talking about overall accuracy versus barrel length, that very well may not be affected at all. In my opinion......save the short barrels for self defense shotguns and handguns, not rifles. It defeats the purpose of having all this precision made ammunition and firearms when you cannot utilize the full capability of it. Just my view, not saying you are wrong. Just saying the numbers don't lie.

It's doesn't exactly work that way all the time. Too many variables to discuss absolutes like that when you don't know the load to know if the powder burn-off rate and all sorts of variables. There's also the increased rigidity of a shorter barrel when you're comparing a 20" for instance to a 24-26" with all other things being equal. I've used 24" barrels as well as 20" barrels in competitions and they each have their pros and cons. If all you care about it velocity and are running a round that will allow you to maximize case volume then you may net additional velocity which may or may not help ultimately but as far as this conversation... too many unknowns to speak in such absolution. FWIW, my hottest loads (velocity-wise) are rarely my most consistent & accurate loads. That last hundred fps will also bake a barrel in short order too and your groups will start opening up about the time you get a good load worked up and are familiar with the setup. Traditional thought is that longer is better when it comes to barrels, especially on precision rifles, but this isn't always the care and there's lots of considerations that need to be accounted for.(quote)

All i'm saying is every cartridge has an optimum barrel length. Yes faster and slower powders can be used to make the best of a longer/shorter barrel but that only goes so far. Yes there are alot of variables and other factors in the whole equation. BTW It's nice to have an intelligent convo with somone who seems to know a thing or two.
