OK all you arms experts - Your thoughts on .32acp target ammo from Federal that could be up to 40 years old. Attempt to shoot it, or properly dispose of it? If dispose of it is there a good resource I can check out to follow the proper procedures?

Story - I took my Father in law shooting for his first time Saturday. He was overwhelmed but enjoyed the day. Sunday he pulls out of some mothballing a Beretta Model 90.

The thing is in awesome shape with minimal wear. It was given to him from family years ago and he just stored it away in the basement. It just needs a cleaning from being stored in the original cardboard box it came in. We are getting it checked out by a gun smith tomorrow. However there was a box of ammo and a loaded mag. No idea how old the ammo is but it is in brass casing. I figure the mag might be shot since the spring could have been compressed for up to 40 years. I have seen mags on line so no big deal there just more curious about the ammo and if it can be expelled still or how much gun power breaks down over the years.

Yeah I know I could ask this elsewhere in TW but I trust a few opinions and knowledge based persons in Colorado.

I don't hold myself out to be an expert, but if the ammo looks fine (not all corroded and stuff) it should be fine.

I'd go ahead and try the mag too. Worst thing I can think of is the spring is too weak to properly feed and the gun jams. Jams like fails to properly chamber another round, not jams like damage or anything.

When you go to the gunsmith to get the gun checked out you can verify this.

40 year old Federal .32acp should be fine. Goes w/o saying since you should be doing it anyway but ear & eye pro as well as a hat. I've run 60+ year old NATO surplus ammo in competitions so don't sweat it. Ammo is pretty non-volatile generally. Magazine is probably fine too and being loading, even that long, likely won't have much effect on it. Just a heads up those handguns & mags can be finicky feeding anyway so don't expect it to run like a top even with new mags & ammo.

Yeah Phil explained that to me when I was over there last night. Bubble wrap is to minimize compound explosions. :D

Ost and Eric - Thanks for the comments on the ammo. Glad to hear. He we are planning on getting him another mag with the pinky grip since the this gun is a tad short. Ost - LOL it is always safety first. :p

I never had a problem when brewing mine with that. Normally two to four would go boom. But out of 20gal that's not too bad.
