Rear Limited Slip Diff Fluid?

I'm miles from the nearest Toyota dealer. I just got my truck. It's got 100k and judging by the cabin air filter and engine air cleaner, I need to go through and change all the fluids now. The manual specifies straight 90 weight in limited slip diff. with an API GL-5 rating. This is the only fluid recommended in the owners manual and it is impossible to find.

What's everyone using out there that won't mess up the limited slip?

That's not limited slip, so u don't need any additives.

 

75/90 should be fine

 

So what kind of diff is it?? Mine is a ' 08 TRD with limited slip when I changed my diff fluid I had to put in LSD fluid in. OP if u have a lsd sticker on your pot u need lsd diff additive unless u run synthetic oil then most of it has the friction modifiers in it. I've heard tacoma didn't like synthetic fluid in the rear diff as they would still chatter. I used regular 75/90 with the LSD additive works fine.

 

x2, TRD Off Roads don't have a mechanical limited slip rear differential. The Owner's Manuals have changed year to year but the differentials have not. That being said,

75W-90 or 80W-90 will work just fine for your rear differential (I have a 2007 and it says 75W-90 for the front and x-fer case and 80W-90 for the rear).

 

Hmm... I was under the impression that it was limited slip. Geez, I hope it is. I'll have to look into this.

I think Justus is right. There is no LSD tag on the rear diff, just AO. From what I've found it looks like its a locker. After researching how those operate, I'm even more confused than I was before. It looks like the best place to know for sure is to look at the buttons I have on the dash. Duh....

Like I said earlier, I just got it. Obviously I don't know squat about it yet. I'll have to see what I have for toggles on the dash. It sounds like it has a pretty cool system and more variability than I'm used to with my old Ford Supercrew.

 

TRD Off Road = No limited slip. The mechanical limited slip differential was only on the TRD Sport up through 2008. The locker acts like an open differential until you flip the switch on the dash (locker will only engage in 4Lo unless you redo your wiring).

 

Yes, thanks Pugga. It does seem a little strange that it's only available in 4lo. People actually rewire them? I don't know if I dare to do that. It would be easy to forget it's on and not shut it off.

 

Mechanical LSD are in Non-TRD SR5's through 2008 too, I have one.

 

Not all of them. It was an option on some SR5 models but, either way, it was never an option on the Off Road.

 

Hmm interesting I thought the electronic locker was only available after '09 in the configuration u talked of pugga. I thought all pre '09 trd's had mechanical rear lsd and the electric locker was a feature in start of '09. Well u learn something new everyday. Thanks.

 

No sir, TRD Off Road (all years, from 1998-current) have the e-locker (except on the 98-04 tacomas that have a 4cyl and TRD package)
Trd sport (tacomas) From 05-08 have a limited slip, 09+ trucks use the brakes to simulate a LSD.
SR5 on some tacomas (unsure of the year range) can come with LSD's.

 

95 Taco pretty much nailed it.

2005 thru 2008 TRD Sports have a mechanical LSD which requires an additive when you change the diff fluid.
2009+ TRDs have A-LSD which uses the brakes to simulate limited slip but they are just open differentials (no additive necessary)
2005+ TRD Off Roads have the E-locker (no additive necessary, functions as an open differential until locked)
2005 - 2008 mechanical LSD was an option for SR5, but not standard
2009+ SR5 have open differentials

I have a 06 TRD SR-5. There was a LSD tag next to the rear diff. fill hole. I used

Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic with modifiers. No issues. About 500mi.

 

I assume by "TRD" u are referring to the TRD SPORT......... which if u do have then ur right by putting modifiers in.

OP has an offroad, therefore he doesnt need any modifiers

 

I believe newer SR5s have A-LSD. In either case API GL5 75W90 or 80W90 would work.
