I purchased a 2013 Tacoma TRD double cab. Less than two months ago. The other day my friend and I decided to take a trip to the local hardware store. Everything was working fine with the truck. However once my friend sat in the truck. My airbag light stays on the dash. The airbag on the passenger side says off when my wife is in the truck. And the seatbelt warning light keeps flashing even when the belt is buckled or no one is even in the truck with me. I notified the dealer. They are extremely rude. I asked if i could drop the truck off and take a loaner. They won't let me have one unless they are going to keep it over night.
Now my friend is a rather large guy. 6 foot 450 pounds. So I explained to the shop technician that maybe his weight tripped the sensor. He politely said that they could reset it however every time he gets in the truck it will do the same thing. One of the guys there suggested jokingly that he should just ride in the back.
At that point I told them that if my friend can't ride with me in the truck and there isn't a way to fix it. Then give me my money back and I will buy something else. I called customer care. Waiting for a response soon. I decided that I will never visit this dealership unless its for a full refund.
Does Toyota offer a program that if you aren't satisfied they will take the vehicle back. This truck has right at 1,000 miles on it

Did you check the plugs to make sure nothing was loose under the seat before taking into the dealership? No vehicle manufacture has a "buyback if not satisfied" plan that I am aware of. Take it to a different dealer...some are hit or miss. Mine has been fantastic...minus the dick who works over at their body shop.

Go to another dealer. If I bought something new from you. A month later I wanted to return it to you because I wasn't satisfied. Would you take my return? Even though it's now considered used?

Find a different dealer. 450 is big, but I'm pretty sure the seats are rated for it.

Not being rude, but are airbags effective at that weight? Is it dangerous for the friend to ride up front?

all valid points, however, your friend is tipping the scale in a large way, you have to take that into consideration...

Unfortunately this is the only dealership close by. The next one is 100 miles away.

I'd also file a complaint with Toyota Corporate. Even if your buddy's weight is the cause and they can't do anything about that, the unprofessionalism from the techs is uncalled for. It seems these days its harder and harder to find people that take pride in what they do. You have to keep them honest by forcing some kind of oversight.

Your friend is a big boy. Maybe he should go with you to the dealer and see if they smack talk the guy when he is standing in front of them- or over them as it may be!

I'll be honest with you, a 450 pound weight in the front seat, or any seat for that matter, on a mid-sized truck is asking a lot. I am pretty sure that a connector or something is being stressed/pulled and that is setting the code. I am not sure if Toyota's weight control system also includes over-capacity. What I mean is that the air bag is designed to not deploy if nobody is in the seat, hence the way it sets off the seatbelt warning only if someone is sitting there, and it MAY be designed in such a way that such a large person in the passenger's seat may actually have a risk of injury if the airbag were to deploy, so the system disables itself. That being said you most likely will need to speak with someone who is an airbag specialist for Toyota to find this out.

The tech who made the comment was not being tactful, but I am doubt he was intending to be insulting. While perhaps a word from the service manager may be a good idea, always think about the end results before making a formal or verbal complaint. Would you want the tech to just get a reprimand, and be reminded to use his head? Would you be ok with the tech being fired over this? People make stupid mistakes here all the time, as well as in life, yet friends cry out all the time for their friends here to not get banned because they just made one stupid mistake. Give the guy the benefit of the doubt on the first mistake. In today's job market, losing a job can ruin entire families. And before you say it can't happen, I know a person who was fired for doing something as simple as sending an email cartoon to some co-workers. One was insulted and the guy lost his job. It CAN happen.

60 pounds difference from OP's situation though. For all we know 400 could be the limit on the seat as to the possibility that BamaToy was referencing. Who knows
