Just trying to gather data to force Toyota into fixing this. Next week I'll drop another few bucks on a 2-day TIS (I do this once a month since the problem started) to check for any new TSB's.

I think I can get up to date tsb's as well so don't spend money yet. I can report back the possibility of me doing the scantool thing and possibly a time frame as well. It might take me a day or two to be in the right situation where I have my truck and a scan tool at the same time. Nonetheless we will figure something out soon.

Funny, seems plenty of other people can hear it just fine.

    Yeah.
I can hear the knock in your video, but hard to hear in the 2GR one. To be honest, it sounds like normal low-octane ping that gets detected and adjusted for. It happens under the exact conditions you would expect it to. If I ran the lowest octane at the pump, I would expect that exact same behavior out of my engine.

Run a few tanks of 91 through it. You seem to be experimenting with different fuels but going back to 86/87 or whatever you get there. Flush all that crap gas out.

No, I've been running 91 (or better by adding a few gallons of Sunoco 100) since August (previous to that I was switching back and forth).

If you stay on the throttle, the noise persists. The computer does not further retard the timing. This is not transient knock, it will continue. If I was driving a manual transmission vehicle, I would expect me to pick a different (lower) gear. This isn't an MT. The truck simply should not do this on any octane fuel rated 87 or higher.

Bear in mind that Toyota's alleged position isn't "We know of the problem and this is normal". It's "We know of the problem and we don't have a fix." That implies it needs to be fixed. Which means this isn't normal 'light' knock allowed for in the manual.

Hell, I don't care if they left an extra gopher in the motor at the factory. Whatever it is, just fix it.

    :sigh:

All OBDII controlled engines ping slightly, this is common in many auto makers, likewise you should never mix Knock rated fuels ( AKI or Octane)

OMG, thats not knocking or pre detonation

Thats valve train( not rocker to valve) and or crank train noise, you do realize in production vehicles most engines crank train aren't highly balanced and there can be times at RPM intervals were a slight harmonics feedback can be felt or heard?

This ain't slight and that's bullshit about mixing various AKI fuels. That's almost as bad as the old "synthetic oil will make your seals leak" that went around 20 years ago.

Then why does 93 octane get rid of it for some people?

Also, the chief engineer for the Tacoma and Tundra platforms is Mike Sweers. Took me a while to figure out the email address and format, but...

For those who don't know, Michael Sweers is the chief engineer for the Tacoma and Tundra platforms. He is located in Michigan, at the Toyota Technical Center, U.S.A. TTC is a division of Toyota Engineering and Manufacturing, North America (TEMA).

It took me most of the night, but I think I figured out the email address format for him.

first clue would be to identifying and diagnosing it properly, in those "other people" cases they may have truly had a per-detonation issues, your video is not, that's mechanical harmonics.

obviously not working for you would be the other clue...

If it was hard parts making noise like you say then why is there reported drivability issues such as lack of power or poor fuel economy? From what I can put together people who report those types of problems usually have this one as well. Tomorrow at 7:30am I will be able to run diagnostics on my truck and then we can really understand what's happening instead of speculation. Maybe it is just noise caused by normal operation or maybe it's far worse? I hope tomorrow is a fruitful day.

Brief update: The email address posted for Mike Sweers works. Whether it gets to him or not, I don't know. But it does get to someone that reads his email. Received this bullshit & fluff reply, FWIW.

Kick ass. I appreciate you doing this. Anything that shines more light on the problem (whether it debunks or confirms a theory) is good news for all of us.

Maybe if you can redirect the capture to a PC and turn it into Excel data or a PDF file, we can give that to Toyota, too. It seems they must have a dearth of engineers available to diagnose and fix this problem.

Are you one of these people that just wants to deny there is a problem because you've nothing better to do? Help or be quiet.

Just what, exactly, do you hope to accomplish by bombing the engineer's e-mail?? He doesn't have a dog in this fight and all you're ever going to get is, thanks, my engineering staff will look into it... You need customer service to recognize that there's a problem and get them to do something about. e-bombing the engineer's e-mail address won't get you resolution and publically posting his e-mail address is just an asshat move on your part.
