El Cheapo Heated Mirrors

Once I get around to calling that company, I'll post back but it looks like that TDR-MC will do what you want. Something triggers it to turn on, and it automatically turns off after a pre-determined amount of time. I've got a list of projects in front of this one...

Also, I believe Contura makes a momentary switch as well. I didn't see one that was laser etched with the heated mirror symbol but maybe you could get a blank one to aesthetically match the others? I'm kind of in the same boat in the sense that I'm switching everything over to Contura switches instead of the OEM ones.

 

OTRATTW can have custom laser etches.

 

I just read up on their website and that relay will definitely work.. Tdr-p

$29 is a whole lot of money for a relay though, but I guess it's cheaper than the highlander switch and atleast I won't have to worry about leaving the heaters on.

 

Bah, no. I didn't even do the second part. (I ordered everything, but haven't installed anything).

 

I'm gonna do this but plan on wiring them into the factory defrost switch.

 

Yeah, the climate control switch. I went into the dealership one day asking about an OEM mirror defrost switch. The guy told me they didn't have one and besides they were wired in through the control switch. I haven't had much time to do any more research on it but it sounds liget. Maybe there is a timer also, not sure. I like the idea because it keeps it stock looking and it frees up a spot that I can use for something else.

 

Did this tonight...this has to be probably one of the easiest mods I have ever done....smh...I was actually kind of intimidated, but I'll be damned if I didn't do both mirrors minus the wiring and removal and install on the truck, in roughly 10-15 min total...

Be careful...I had to redo mine with the sienna mirrors with the heating element already on the glass. My passenger side broke after a 5 min run

 

What do you mean? How did it break?

 

Too much heat on the glass....and it cracked and broke as I sat in a parking spot.

 

Do you know how long they were on for? Or which brand you used? Makes me think maybe I should just wire them up with the high/low/off switch that came with them...
I got the mirrors out and ran wires through the doors, but didn't get any further than that lol

 

I used the switch that came with them...If you use them only use the low setting IMHO

 

Ok different brand than mine. I guess I'll just wire them up with the resistor and if they don't heat up enough, ill remove it

 

Well I finally got started on my mirrors. I was surprised how they came out of the backing pieces. I thought there was double sided foam, but the mirrors were only held in by the edge of the backing pieces. I warmed them in the oven to make them easier to pry off.

I used the existing square holes in the backing pieces to route the wires.

I used pl mirror mastic to glue the mirrors back into the backing pieces, but I don't think it's necessary after seeing how they were held in there originally.

Routing the wires through the mirror housing was a bit annoying, but after I unbolted the housing from the arm I was able to get the wires through.

I also tested the heating elements to see how hot they get... Thanks for the heads up slimwood... I think high might be too hot.. It's hard to hold them at that temperature. So ill wire them up with the resistor for the low setting and I think it should work just fine. They are still quite warm even on low.

 

No problem...it may be common sense, but who knows....my shit got hot as fuck!!

 

Didnt end up using my time delay relay.. couldnt seem to get it to work the way I wanted, and i'm not sure if maybe I ordered the wrong one.. but if anyone wants a TDR-P from wolstentech.com let me know

When you bought the sienna mirrors did all you need to do was wire up an on/off switch? Did the pwr mirror connector match up with the Tacoma pwr mirror switch? I think I might buy the siennas if something ever happens to my originals.

 

All I bought was the glass. Just wire them up POS and neg to a switch and you will be fine.
