My parents bought me a taco for my first car before I even knew what a taco was. I wanted my mom's sierra. Best parents ever huh?

Never crashed it, bought my own taco when I turned 18 because I wanted a better taco.

    2001 Toyota Tacoma
I had a Toyota Tacoma as my first car. It was a mixed bag, it's true that a kids first car gets trashed and mine was no exception although it came with a load of problems. My Dad gave me his 2001 Toyota Tacoma with a rotted frame, out of warranty. I drove it from my last two years of High School until Christmas 2012 or so. It was excellent. Safe, reliable, dependable. Especially getting me to work in some pretty crazy snow storms and hurricanes. It was a friend mover, used it around the house to haul firewood. It really was perfect for me.

But being a teenager there are probably enough petrified McDonalds french fries in the floor boards to feed an African village for a few weeks. The frame was already a lost cause and the transmission had been replaced by my dad before he gave it to me, so it was dying and last year the frame finally cracked. The truck was hurting, rust holes in the body, frame was FUBAR, interior wasn't bad though aside from being somewhat messy.

I traded it in today for $1000 and got a 2001 Toyota Tacoma to replace it, coming full circle. I intend to take care of this truck better than any girl friend, child or pet I've ever had or could potentially have.

It's hard to picture myself driving anything else. So I think for a first car it's great IF you can find a Gen1 like 2001-2004 in decent condition (replaced frame or coated etc.) because you're looking at a reasonable price range for a first car (with 4WD if you so desire) and depending on what you use it for you can get an Extended or Doublecab for your friends, the bed is compact and handy and if your family doesn't already have a pickup around the house it may be worth playing that card as well.

You can get 2003-2004 Tacoma's with anti-lock breaks and the 01 I just bought has ABS which my previous one didn't.

My parents never bought me a car. I thank them for not spoiling me and making me work for what I want.

Your first car should be something that you don't care about, doesn't cost a lot, and runs great.. Because you will get fucked up sooner or later. Driving does in fact have a learning curve and a big one at that. Buy cheap, save up for a nice one when you have a few years under your belt.

No. My parents let me drive a 96 5 lugger base model reg cab with no a/c and power nothing. I wanted something 4x4 for Iowa winters and bigger (I'm 6'5") so I bought my own truck. They capitalized on the whole deal when they sold it back to Toyota for frame rust.

Me. I only kept my first car (79 Mustang) about 6 months..not because it died or anything, I bought another car. Ended up getting $450 for it which was a little more than the purchase and repairs over 6 months cost me, basically it only cost me fuel and oil to drive it. Can't beat that.

Come to think of it, a classmate's parents got him a new Toyota truck (90 or 91) and he treated it like gold..

I've been driving for over 5 years, haven't crashed anything, and the only vehicles i've rolled were a 3 wheeler and golf cart.

Well other than reliability, ability to go anywhere, and added utility of a bed... I'd have to contend that if you drive it like it's supposed to be driven (slow and safe around the corners) it's safer than any car will ever be.

The blind spots in a truck are almost non-existent allowing you to see everything and everyone around you and giving you ample time to react to possible accidents or avoid hazards.
You are also higher up, meaning if there is an accident ahead you will see vehicles stopping and you won't be sandwiched before you know it.
Bigger tires also make for less damage. No rubbing wheels on curbs or ripping bumpers off on cement parking blocks.
And should you happen to get in an accident, you're at least not going to be crushed. Getting rear ended ain't nuffin (6.5 feet of safety), frame will stand up to a front crash, and getting t-boned is always a bish but other vehicles will contact you at a lower point (the frame) and hold the impact better.

All that being said, it's a truly liberating vehicle and that can be dangerous. The ability to go anywhere and do anything might tempt you to do things you wouldn't normally do and they're usually a bad idea they ends in a few bad phone calls.

    A Tacoma is reliable.

I've only driven Tacoma's since I have been licensed.
