What should I use to cover up the bare metal after I drill holes in the frame to keep it from rusting? What matches the frame color best?

I did that on mine and it hasn't flaked or shown any signs of wear at all after several months.

Your best bet is to use a self etching primer first so the paint truly sticks to the bare metal. Get some rattle can self etching primer and spray it into the cap or plastic cup to make a small puddle and then brush on the primer with a Qtip inside the hole you drilled. Do a couple coats to make sure you have it covered well.

As far as color matching the problem is that most paints are glossy so look for a flat or satin finish. Some of the engine, chassis and exhaust paints come pretty close.

Locktite Duro Extend - this is a conversion coating so you need to let it flash rust then apply. The product combines with the iron oxide and creates a black coating that is very durable. You need either a second coat of extend or a top coat of something else to complete the process. I was able to completely kill all of the rust on my FJ40 and it did not return. I also used on river intake structures to successfully hold back rust when I was responsible for paint protection systems at a large industrial facility (it was sold under DuPont label at the time).

Why does it say it will cause rust if applied to non rusted surface?
