So I buy a demo vehicle 2013 tacoma DCSB off road with 5900 miles on the odo. I am assured that the 5k mile maintenance has been accomplished. I recently log into the toyota owner site and see that there is no maintenance history added to my vehicle. I call the dealer up and they said they can see the service on their end and lists everything they did to the truck....minus the oil change. I tell him that I am now sitting at 9200 miles, but they assure me everything will be fine until my 10k mile service....WTF. I am going to change the oil myself today or should I hold off and talk to Toyota directly?

well they did remember to rotate the tires and check the security of the drivers floor mat thank heavens for that. I knew it was a demo model and the price was reduced to reflect that.

WRONG! My 2013 Tacoma 4 cylinder requires oil changes every 5000 miles according to my owner's manual.

Probably depends which schedule you're looking at. Pretty sure the standard recommendation is 10k for the 4 cylinder since it comes with synthetic oil.

I have a 4 cylinder with 15000miles. When i took my truck in for the first 5000miles they said since its synthetic oil so it needed changed after 10000. Is this true? Idk. But its what they told me.

I'd be more concerned about 5900 miles on a "demonstrator."

That is the norm for the 4 cyl now that it comes with synthetic.

    Depends.

In 2013, the spec changed to 0W-20 for mpg reasons. (a Synthetic, compared to the previous 5W-20, a mineral oil)

The schedule was not changed though; and despite what some service departments think, there is Toyota Documentation that specifically calls out for the 4Cyl with 0W-20 to still receive an oil change every 5,000 miles under the Toyota care package for the two years/24k miles. I was mailed a colorful mailer that outlined my Toyota care for my 4 Cylinder Access Cab that had a foot note to this point in particular.

If they try to tell you that you only get two oil changes during the two year coverage, (at 10k and 20k respectively) then show them the documentation to prove how stupid/uninformed they are, and then go to a different service department/dealer.

If you need a pic of the mailer, let me know.

    Too few to list.
I think sometimes what they call "demo" is when someone originally bought it and the dealer could not secure financing for it a month or so later so they have to take it back hence that many miles on it. It was never registered due to above so technically they cannot sell it as new with that many miles and can't sell it as used it was not registered so they call it demo.

btw just change your own oil and use whatever you prefer, either synth or dino.

In my experience, when there's a dealer-initiated ownership change, the maintenance history prior to the ownership change is not visible. When I leased my truck, I could see all the maintenance history during the lease. After I bought out the truck at lease end (i.e. title changed from Toyota Financial to me), the maintenance history was wiped clean.

Are you on ToyotaCare (i.e. is the 10k service free anyway)? If so, don't bother talking to Toyota and just do the 10k service. Since the screwup was at the dealer, you might be giving Toyota corporate ammunition to deny a powertrain warranty claim in the future. ("Failed to properly maintain vehicle per schedule...")

This. 90915-20004 comes from the factory. The Toyota service filters sold at the dealer's parts counter would be 90915-YZZD3. This is more reliable evidence than any computer listing.

It could have been the sales manager's company car for a few months. In some ways it's preferable over a "real" demo where customers thrash the vehicle in frequent short trips.

I wouldnt even fight with them over an oil change cause its just going to be more of a headache then anything. DIY oil changes are super simple on our trucks so I'd say just change it yourself.

So they went to the trouble of resetting the light but did not change the oil? How did you determine that?

Still a red flag. That's basically a repo.

True, but over the years I've known quite a few sales people, sale managers and a couple of dealership owners. None of them ever babied their company cars.

Have you checked the filter yet? I bet they changed the oil but just didn't log it in the computer.

It was the service dept. managers truck it was not a customer "repo". I changed the oil tonight it was super simple and took all of 30 minutes. I will not be doing back to that dealer unless it is for warranty work. Thanks for all the responses. The filter was the one from the manufacturer it had not been changed.
