Norcal Spotted and BS Thread

Alright, I have a question. I've always gone camping at designated campgrounds. However, in my random exploring around the Tahoe foothills. I've seen people just setting up camp near fire roads and whatnot. This was up in the Foresthill area. Reason I'm asking is that Justin and I are trying to get a last camping trip in before the snow and we don't want to be at some commercial campground. we are both fans of driving till the road ends and setting up camp wherever. Are there any rules/guidelines or anything we should worry about?

I did a very similar thing in Kings Canyon a couple years back, but didn't know if it was technically 'allowed'.

As far as USFS and BLM public lands go:

You have to have a fire permit in order to use a stove, charcoal grill or campfire. Further, you have to respect any fire restrictions in effect - pretty much campfires prohibited in any of the high fire danger low foothills by this time of year.

Not sure what impact the Fed Shutdown has on any of this. I suspect roads into USFS lands may be gated closed.
