Alex, don't you have the Toyota 8.4" diff? That diff is pretty strong, the TRD Off Road with the locker has the 8".

Well once I pay my dad off (only $900 left!!!!) I will have $400 extra per month to save. 10 months and I have my rear axle with 4.56's and an ARB locker.

It tends to be more extensive when you put your own kit together. I plan on getting a full kit that has everything already, and allpro confirmed that these kits have been installed problem free on quite a few FJs.

Do I need it? Probably not, but this way I get more height, more flex, and when I retire it to a trail rig, it'll be all done and ready for fun!

I have an 8". The 4Runner and FJ both have 8" regardless of being open or elocker.

So can you just swap in the guts from a TRD Off Road Tacoma and have the e-locker? Not sure if it's the same housing or not.

Yes and no. I can fit an 8" elocker if I trim the opening of my housing and add a few more studs. At this point, I'm in $600+ for the 3rd, then I need to figure out wiring or a cable shift option to engage it. Not to mention regearing that 3rd member and changing out the bearings.

That puts you into the price range of an ARB locker with whatever gearing you want.

An ARB would run you around $1,600 with setup and shit.

For twice that ARB 3rd member, you can get a new 35 spline axle with a 9.75" diff, a wider stance, and a higher rear diff height so you don't drag the pumpkin all over the rocks like I do all the time.

A Dana 60 is a much stronger axle. Parts are easier to find too

I'm not disagreeing with you, I was just curious how easily your housing would accept the e-locker. ARB also has the benefit of on board air :D

Haven't decided what my long term goal is going to be for this truck. I don't know if i'll run it into the ground and get a fun car for commuting or trade it at some point and keep on with one vehicle. Time will tell...

Yeah. So I can have OBA, ARB lockers and some beefy 1 tons haha.

And no, I understand man. I was just explaining my rationale behind this decision. It's more expensive but it's damn sure better than blowing a Toyota 8" 3rd member and paying $3,000 for a new one, or god forbid, have what happened to Cam's axle housing! Shoot the damn ring gear straight through the backside of the housing. The 35 spline axles are WAY stronger, plus the wall thickness of the axle tubes is much more than stock. I think they are 3" diameter with .3750" wall thickness compared to our thinner axle tube walls

A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.
You don't have a choice now. Resale/trade value is in the toilet, so you may as well invest in making it a really solid trail rig.

Plus full floaters vs. what we have now. Did you see the rear axle from Tostidos' build? The plating on that thing is nuts! Granted, it's a full blown desert racer but wholly hell that thing will take a hit when it's done!

Yes that too! That poor truck has had a hard 2 years and now I wanna build it up 3x as strong. I'll keep it forever. No one would buy it after looking at the history! They would cross themselves, yell "Ay dios mio!!!!", and run like hell lmao.

If things go my way, when I get a garage I'll do a body off restoration of sorts. Basically I just want to sand the frame down bare and rhino line it. Keep it solid and rust free for a long time

No I haven't seen his build yet. I've been reading a few others though. A lot goes into making a ridiculous truck!

Rear axle is just a swap out. Front axle I will have help from Cam. We already discussed things and it's gonna be sweet.

It is. Comes fully assembled so all I have to do is drop the stock as and throw the new one in. It's a one person job.
