I bought a 2007 Tacoma and received 3 keys, two with remotes and one what I call a valet key which I used for the hide a key under the truck.

I just replaced the truck with a 2013 Tacoma [same truck but seems so much sweeter without all the experience I gave the other]

It only came with the 2 keys and remotes. I called the dealer and they said that's what Toyota does now. So taking his word I am shopping for a spare key I can buy online. I found this one on Amazon for $30 + $4: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0089KNIZ2/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2ECM6DMAM7VGN It seems to be an OEM and they say I still need to cut and program it.

Did any of you get a 3rd key with your 2013 ?

I just purchased a 2014 and I received 2 keys with remotes. In addition I received a "card key" which is a key cut into a credit card size of plastic that can be put in your wallet (or elsewhere) and is only good for unlocking the doors. No "valet key" was included.

I specifically asked for a third key when I bought my '13 and they said no. They told me I'd have to go through the parts dept. and order the key $$.

There is a way to program a chip key your self if you have a "master" key. It's similar to programming a fob remote. Search it on YouTube that is where I found it. A chip key from the dealer is $280. eBay and Amazon is your best bet get it cut and program it yourself.

I never understood the pint of a hide a key. I mean, if you took your truck somewhere, your going to have your key on you. Only reason you wouldn't is if you park it somewhere for an extended period of time. and at that point, id keep it in my garage and taxie. what are other reasons for justifying a hide a key, other than in invitation for thieves

Just bought my 13 two weeks ago. Red, baby. 2 sets of key+fob. No valet. I'm not worried about it. We've bought 94 and 04 Toyotas. Both came with valet keys so they've stopped this recently. Again, not keeping me up at night.

    BUT

Now furiously looking for the hide-a-key. No idea if I have that...

I keep a valet key in my hitchsafe, things is pretty sturdy and requires a combo to open.

My '11 white gauges came with a valet key, so this is a policy they started with the 2012+

They won't include a $5 console net either... and I hope you didn't drop $35k on yours.

Well, since this topic came up, I pulled out my cheapo looking valet card key to see how well it worked. It's pretty pathetic looking, but I figured it only has to unlock the door. So, I went to try it today and it cracked the key. Luckily it didn't break off in the key hole, just sort of made a spiral crack down a portion of the key. Didn't unlock the door either. So, I would not put any faith in it. I didn't lock my keys in or anything, I just wanted to see how well it worked. There was my answer.

my 2014 only came with 2 keys & fob's Went to Lowe's & got a doors only key that works just fine for <$3.00. Check dealer priceing on a "programmed" key got prices from 3 different dealers 3 different prices!
ranged from $54 to $130 Key + programming. Ironically, the best price key was at the best "no haggle" price dealership where I got the truck.

The FOB's still seem to be high ( $140 ish) but the FCC ID GQ43VT20t seems to be quite common across a bunch of models & model years. anyone know if the 13's/14's can be self programmed or is this a "dealer' only job like the key?
