Got a question for any of you who have teenagers. I'm looking for something different to motivate Noah to get better grades. Again this year, same shit, not trying, getting an A, a B or two, a few Cs and a D. We can't seem to get him to try at all.

Whenever I was growing up, my mom always told me that if I got straight A's I could get a puppy (my mom's parents owned a working farm where they raised beef cattle. Dogs were not pets to them, they were there to serve a "purpose.") All through high school I never once got straight A's.

Winter break before I graduate college I got a puppy. That spring semester I got straight A's (which incidentally bumped me up to magna cum laude.) My mom should have not said if I got straight A's I could get a puppy, she should have gotten me a puppy and I would have gotten straight A's :)

    He's distracted by something.

Get him a hooker. It will take the pressure off so he can see straight again.

I got lucky, my parents said if I got a 4.0 then they would buy me a 5000 vehicle, pay for gas and insurance. Need less to say I got a 4.0 through high school, and a Tacoma :D

I've tried that, but sometimes they say they are sending a female and then you end up with a male. I don't like surprises.

x2 .... figuring out exactly what is the hard part.

Or depending on your relationship ... threat of physical harm sometimes works with teenage boys who think they've figured it all out. True story follows:

God, was it really 11 yrs ago? ... I'm getting too old too fast.

Anyway, our oldest son decided he wasn't going to do his chemistry work one year because he basically didn't like the teacher. He might have gotten that from me, because honestly I didn't care for the guy either. I went in and talked with the teacher, found out what assignments could still be completed and how he could do extra work to save his grade. Brought the list home and sat down with him to explain how in life there would be times when you might not care for the person in authority, but that doesn't mean you can disregard them. Sort of a mini life lesson. At the end of our talk, I pretty much bowed up on him (I'm not little) and told him if he didn't take care of his assignments and pull out a passing grade, I'd take him out back and kick his ass. That evening when we go to bed, my wife tells me, "You were pretty scary this afternoon, that may have been over the top." To which I replied, "I'm not gonna hurt that boy, BUT HE DOESN'T NEED TO KNOW THAT!"

.... somehow he managed to pull out an overall B for the class.

For it to work, the ground work has to have been laid when they were young; there has to be just enough fear that they think you might actually do physical harm before letting them do something stupid. A "tough love" approach I guess is what it could be called.

:notsure: Not sure it still works with today's teenagers, but it's all I could come up with to relate from my own experience.

Good luck .... no one ever said being a parent was easy. But it is worth it if you get the important parts right. ;)
