I have 3 pit bulls in my family. I knew that if I was going to have one, that it wasnt going to be a back yard dog. Pit bulls love being a part of the family. That is where the breed really shines. My wife was nervous of getting one. She only knew of the breed through the news and all the negative attention.Well, she is the reason we have #2 and #3. She loves the breed. My three kids cant get enough of these dogs. They are always doing some kind of activity with them. The girls will put nail polish on the female pit bull. Dress all of them up. The pit bulls just love all that attention.

    So sorry.

You need to find a Good, qualified trainer now!!! Good luck.

I'll say 90% is the owners fault and the other 10% is crappy breeding.

I have 2 pit bulls right now 9 year old and 5 month old. I also have 2 Chihuahua's, and a Yorkshire Terrier. I've owned 4 pit bulls in my life and its the one and only breed I will never in my life live without. Pit's are the most amazing dogs every. All my dogs are rescues, and my oldest dog Jixer was abused, starved, and left for dead in the middle of nowhere, she survived and is one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever see in your life. After people tried to make her a fighter, then torture her, she still loves every person she comes across and smiles with that big ol' pitty smile of hers.

Hands down, Pit Bulls are the best breed of dogs.

Here is the Puppy with the older one. We've had the brown dog since she was 1 and doesn't care when the puppy uses her as his personal teething toy. :)

And this is all my dogs minus the white one who I had to put down due to cancer.

I have never owned a pit bull, but my sister has had 4 in her lifetime. Mrs lou was a great dog, loved all people, was raised from a pup in a loving family home. That dog hated any other animal and wanted to kill any dog, cat bird it ever had seen, on the other hand, it rolled around on the floor with my niece when she was just an infant. Again was raised from a pup in a great home where it was loved. This dog could never go out into public, it had to live its life in the back yard.

Pan ahead to today, my sister has a pit bull named Franklin, again raised since a pup in a great home where he has never been abused. He has killed 4 neighbors cats that he caught in the backyard, and recently bolted out the front door past my sister and ripped a small dog being walked on a leash from its owner and killed it right there in a matter of seconds. This dog is very friendly to all people. Unfortunately this dog is way too much of a liability to my sister, i told her she needed to have the dog put down, and for the first time in her life she listened to me. Took the dog to her vet and had it put down this past tuesday. My sisters neighbors absolutely hate her because of the cats and the dog that were killed.

    Is it the owners ? sure, sometimes it is, is there something that is in these dogs naturally ? { not all, but yes some have it }

I have only owned cattle dogs for 15 years, never in my life did i ever take my dogs and teach them to heard cattle, but low and behold, get them around cows and horses and there instinct kicks in and they heard. Must be something in there DNA, or is just coincidence. hmmmm

Could also be that they weren't socialized enough as puppies. Exposed to more things than their house and back yard.

That is kind of what I was saying. Dogs in general have a killer instinct that evolved from wolves. I just think that some breeds have that closer to the surface than others. And who knows what triggers it, or when.

I've got a Lab/Pit mix, and she's a sweetheart. Most lovable dog I've ever had. We've got a cat who the dog loves beyond belief (The crap she puts up with from that cat, I swear...)
Plus we've got a dozen chickens, two roosters and a goose. The goose chases her around the yard (the dog thinks it's a game, the goose...not so much).

On the other hand, don't F*ck with my girlfriend when that dog's around. The only time I've ever had my dog get remotely aggressive was when some drunk at a party shoved her. She wanted to do some serious damage to that guy.

Of course they're not mean. The problem is asshole owners, and that the dog has been bred to be pretty much a perfect killing machine (there's a similar problem with Jack Russell Terriers, but they can't bite humans so bad). Let's face it, no other domestic dog's jaws can do so much damage. But no, they are not by nature mean. Not at all. Meanest one I ever knew would exhaust you with requests for belly rubs.

Ought to make it so you have to get a license to have a dog or kid. Preferably a pretty strict one. Never knew a bad kid or bad dog, just parents that made 'em bad.

I'm as liberal and bleeding-heart as you can get, but for what Vick did to those dogs, well, I think the sack of crap should have gotten the fucking electric chair.

And yeah, guys who breed them for fighting are not doing the breed any favors.

If the house ANY dog was raised up in was a shit hole/the owners treated the dogs like shit, any dog would be mean.. Pitbulls look intimidating but i'd rather have a mean ass pitbull then a cat.. lol

how much socialization did the dog get as a puppy? I have found that some dogs need to being around a lot of different dogs (dog park) and people to break that territorial instinct.

My aussie mix was rescued. great dog, but a man abused her and thus she has always been really territorial when I approach her to pet her or something, usually if she is laying down. She doesn't do this to anyone else in the house, just me. She will start snarling at me but never will bite. I believe it has all stemmed from her past owner and maybe I look like or remind her of him. I know my limitations with her but if she wants some affection, she will approach me when she wants. Everything a dog goes through is stuck with them and certain things may trigger certain feelings/ thoughts which can cause them to be more aggressive than others.

    Nope...

A friend of mine adopted one 2 yrs ago as a rescue dog. Blake had been a bait dog to start his life. I've never met him but take her word for it that this is the most gentle dog you'd ever meet.
