    Hi i was wondering if its ok to use one of the small 2000 lb winchs on a toyota 4x4? Has any one here every did it? I plan to go mudding but nothing to extereme and i was needing a cheap winch w/o breaking my pockets and i figerd one of this would work. The cheapest 9000lb i found was $300 new as to a 2000lb is $50 new.

    No I'm pretty sure it won't work.

    Your truck weighs more than 2000lbs and trying to move that being stuck, you'll either burn up the motor or snap the line but you won't move.

    300 for a 9k winch isnt bad at all. they say u should take ur trucks gross weight and multiply it by 1.5 and that should be about right for the winch. second gens need an 8.5k winch at least

    get a hand winch (well, come-a-long is what you'd need) if you cant afford a powered winch. sure its more work, but just get like a 3 foot pipe to fit over the handle of the come-a-long and it will make it easier.

    last time i went wheeling i got stuck in the mud. used a come-a-long to get me out. i didn't need to be in the truck or anything, just put your truck in neutral and the come-a-long will be able to pull you out.

    It seems like most HF tools are hit or miss. Some are great, some are complete garbage.

    After I got stuck, I myself started looking for come-a-longs. I saw the HF one, but it seems like a 8000 pound working capacity for $30 doesn't seem like it will last, especially given HF's repuatation.

    Here's the one I was looking at getting:
    http://www.arizonatools.com/tools/come-alongs-and-cable-pullers/detail/AZT662/

    There's ~70 user reviews, and pretty much everybody loves it. Plus, it's double geared compared to HF's which is single geared, so the one at AZ tools will be easier to winch with.

    Really a winch is where its at and you dont want to go cheap when it comes to a winch, its not the area to try and fudge alittle.

    on another note...ive been looking into the warn hydraulic ones that use your powersteering unit...anyone got any info on this. for instance will it work with our power steering, will i have to get a bigger powersteering pump, will there be any connection mods needed etc... It seems to me it would be worth it, you could run that puppy all day and not worry about anything vs the electric side of things.

    ive also looked into the warn dual that is 12000 but it has an aircompressor on it...any thoughts on that as well?

    I'd be carfeful about the off brand winches. Back when I was in a 4x4 club with a built Samurai I had, one of the guys had a Harbor Freight 8K winch on his Jeep, burnt it up the first time in use, they replaced it and it burned up again.
    The only Hydraulic powered winches I have been around are the MileMarker, as long as the engine runs it will pull.
    When looking at winches, remember you can use snatch blocks and double line it to make 2x the power of the winch, as long as you have enough cable.
    Personally I would not take a chance on the china made winches, which are comparable in price to USA made handcrank winches.
    Thats just my opinion.

    Yeah I work with 15000lb winches and 28,000lb vehicles all the time at work. pulleys and shackles are a must. There is actually a formula for recoveries. Not sure if anyone is familiar with it. Mire has a 3 levels and they change the weigth of all vehicles accordingly. This actually works for any vehicle. You can know with a little bit of math exactly what it will take to recover the vehicle.

    WxM-RF+TR=Resistance
    W= Weight
    M= Mire
    RF= Resistance reducing Factors
    TR= Tackle Resistance

    THis obviously takes a little explaining if youre not familiar with it. maybe i'll make a thread for people new to recovering.

    That's a great idea. If you do a good write up about the formula and recovering using snatch blocks/tackle we will gladly make it a stickied thread for you.
