Finally got to a range with the Mosin, thing needs some tweeking! I was having a lot of feeding issues, seemed to get a little better as it warmed up. The nose of the bullet wouldn't rise up into the camber and the bolt would actually slide over the rim of the bullet, causing a fun jamb to work out. The rings that hold the top wood piece in place loosened up and worked themselve off also. Not sure what to do about that other than keep an eye on them. Otherwise, it did alright and it was a blast to shoot!

Shoulder is nice and sore from the 12 gauge. We had an old, dead tree that we cut down with the shot gun :D

Nope, that all sounds about right for a Mosin. ;)

I was wondering why people were praising them like they were the second coming in this thread.

Cause they're a ton of fun to shoot! Even with the issues, I really enjoyed shooting the old rifle.

    What's a good duck gun?
I'd like, Semi auto, 3'' chamber, ability to shoot trap loads reliably, and under $750.

    Ahhh, the good ol A-5.
The only ones i've seen have had the 2 3/4'' chamber, but i'll keep a eye out.

If i don't find a auto gun in my price i'm gonna try to pick up a BPS.

Sounds like the magazine might be loose or not bolted up right, making it sit too far from the bolt. Have you taken the rifle apart yet? Try taking it completely apart, including the bolt, and cleaning all the cosmo off. Also there should be clips on the wood stock holding each of the bands in place. are the clips still stiff or are they loose?

I had the gun in pieces when I first got it to strip the cosmoline. The only think I didn't tear apart was the trigger assembly because I wasn't confident I could get it all back together. I did have the bolt down to it's pieces though. I did check the bolts at the range to confirm the bolt by the magazine was tight as well as the one in the rear, everything was hand tight. I did notice that once in a while, the first round wouldn't slide in. The bolt would catch it, but it wouldn't come forward into the camber. I had to open the magazine and push the bullets out the bottom to get them free. Once chambered, everything functioned perfectly. Trigger was a nice, long, stiff trigger and it always ejected the spent cartridge.

Those retainer clips are present and possibly a little loose (can be pretty easily pressed in by hand to allow the rings to slide past).

This just might be the motivation to buy a new stock :D

I have it's big brother; an old .401 WSL made in 1910. I killed an elk with it when I was a kid, and it was my grandpa's deer gun for 60 years or so.

I have this on DVD. Hard to sit through the whole thing with all the yelling the instructors do.

Also, some of the techniques are good for competition, but not so appropriate for combat.

Shit. Looks like the thief has been watching you for some time.

Friend of mine has the m3000, utter piece of junk. It has some serious feeding issues. I have personally take it apart and cleaned the hell out of it to try to help it. The shell that is being loaded into the chamber from the tube gets caught o. The ejection port probably 30% of the time or more

I do, if I'm walking or hunting thick cover. I usually use the 200gr Remington Core-Lokt ammo, but the last couple seasons I've been trying out the Hornady Leverevolution ammo for a change. still 200Gr, though.
I've got a mid-80's Marlin 336 w/a 4x Bushnell scope and see-through mounts, so I can still use the irons for snap shots.

I got a guy offering to trade his 336 for something I never use and has been sitting in the basement. I was looking for a more common round (270 or 30-06) but really in PA you aren't going to have a shot over 150 yards so a 35rem would be fine for my purpose.

Plus its rated (by Marlin at least) for bear and elk so if I wanted to go out in those seasons I could use the same rifle.

    Hum.
I'd probably trust it for black bear; 200gr @ 2200FPS should be enough for that. I don't think I'd want to try my luck with a Grizzly with it...
Not sure about elk; never hunted them before so I'm not sure what they take to drop them.
I know that every deer I've ever seen shot with one has dropped like a stone, but that's not necessarily an indicator of cartridge effectiveness as much as it speaks to the placement of the shots.

Crud, are you sure it's the 3000 and not the 2000? The 2000 had some big issues, but I haven't really read bad things about the 3000.
