I recently test drove a 2013 2.7 5 speed and it really seemed like once you took off it immediately need to be in 2nd. Is yours like this?

I have an auto but my guess is that, like many off-road capable vehicles, first gear is a low gear for maximized "get this fucker moving" torque

Does it not have a tach?

If not, I know manufacturers used to list recommended and max speeds per gear in the owners manual. Not sure bout now.

    But the 5spd shifts itself.

Thinking the trans is designed this way to save fuel .
They match the transmission gearing with the best possible torque curve and fuel efficiency of the engine .
If the transmission gearing is narrow , usually the engine makes its best power and best fuel economy at lower rpms.
Sometimes they build a trans with a couple narrow gears and a couple wide gears for best results

Guys - the "5 speed" mated to the 2.7 is a stick shift, not an automatic.

4x4 or 5 lug? The 5 lug has higher gearing, the 4x4/Prerunner has the 4.10 rear end.

Short answer: the 2.7 is a small engine on a truck this big, and needs to spin lots of rpms to make horsepower.

Some folks drive it slow and easy and do the 1-2 shift around 5mph.

Myself, I use the entire RPM range. If I need to get out in front of traffic, I'm about redlining the thing. If I'm "taking it easy" I tend to shift at/around 3000.

Now, that's with oversized tires and 4.88 gearing - so I'm actually geared a little shorter than stock.

As with anything else: your mileage may vary.

I know but jluyk shows to have a 4.0 5 speed that would make that one an auto. That's why I said it would shift on its own. The 4.0 stick as you know is a 6 speed.

Actually, Ive got a 5 speed manual with the 4.0.

When I went for a milk run this morning I double-checked how fast i was going and at what RPM when it was time for 2nd.

    I shifted from 1st to 2nd at 9mph @ 1300 RPM.

I usually have to shift to 2nd around 10mph and it doesn't want to be in 2nd under 10mph. That's just a guestimate. 1st is a good parking lot gear.

Sounds like they improved it. On my '11, I shift to 2nd too early, due to habit and really feel it lugging.

Are you interpreting 4.0 to mean 4 cylinder? 4.0L is a V6 and comes with a 5 speed auto or 6 speed stick. 2.7L 4cyl comes with a 4 speed auto or 5 speed stick. Unless you have something I have never seen listed in any brochure or the Toyota web site. I have to agree with bjmoose.....pix.

    5-Speed Manual

    • Standard equipment on all 4-cylinder models
    4-Speed Automatic

    • 4-speed Electronically Controlled automatic overdrive Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i); available on 4-cylinder models (excluding 4x4)

    5-Speed Automatic

    • 5-speed Electronically Controlled automatic overdrive Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i); available on V6 models (excludes X-Runner)

    6-Speed Manual

    • Standard equipment on X-Runner/Access Cab V6 (PreRunner and 4x4) and Double Cab 4x4

Of course! That must be jluyk's misinterpretation here.

Built for maximum low end torque, tooter II.VII intake manifold spacer, LCE long tube header, Injen long tube intake, 2,900 rpm torque peak.
First is quite low, and I like it... :)

...because it can be a real help if your truck is heavily loaded, or crawling up a steep hill, or you're towing. It's even low on my 5 lug, and it has really high (3.31) rear end gears.

I think this is wrong. I know I've seen 4 speed auto 4x4s.

and building a tacoma, I've had to select manual transmission.
