Extra storage for short bed?

I've scoured the internet and tried to think of many different solutions to my problem.. But no luck.

I have a DCSB and need more storage.. but because I haul stuff for work fairly often and I want to keep my tonneau cover, I don't want to buy a toolbox. I currently have a plastic Husky toolbox bungee corded down in my bed with my hard hat/vest/etc for work. The bungee cords are obnoxious and inconvenient, but I need to carry everything with me and have it (quickly) removable in case I need the room in my bed.

The storage bins under and behind my seats and my Tuffy Bed security box are all full of other odds and ends too.

What do you all do for storage besides a toolbox? I've been trying to figure out what to do for a couple weeks. I'm at the point of trying to build my own custom toolbox, but just want to see if there are any other options before diving in.

 

Rubbermaid bins?

 

You can get a tool box that fits under the tonneau, or a topper & get rid of the tonneau and make some storage boxes.

 

Have you looked at the SwingCase line? They are side mounted boxes that go near the tailgate. There are also cargo dividers out there that can section off some of the bed and keep your rubber containers stable w/out bungees.

 

Sounds like a topper would solve the problem

What type of gear do you need to carry OP ?

 

Never heard of a swing case.. I'll have to look into that.

I don't really want a shell at this point. I thought about getting one but I don't think I can afford it right now and Im not entirely sure I'd really want one even if I could. I've never had the need for one or the chance to use one, but I'm definitely going keep my eyes open and maybe if I see one for dirt cheap somewhere..

As for my gear, I'm a consulting engineer/inspector so I have a little of everything. Sharpies, pens, paper, spray paint, gloves, chain, 2 flashlights, a mirror, harness, safety lanyard, hard hat, vest, boots, tape measure.. I'm sure there's more but I can't think of it all right now. That's all just for work and then I have my ratchet straps, bungees, knife, tools, jumper cables, etc. that I keep in the truck all the time.

 

I would just do a couple good tool bags or containers as mentioned previously with those tools

 

get some tool bags, take out the plastic storage cubby from behind the back seats. I took the plastic out, and gained a bit of room, i had the storage pretty full now it’s like half full. and if stuff is in tool bags it wont make much noise, but if it’s not it may make some noise.

I think i have pic in my build thread of what it looks like with out.

edit: maybe do that and a tool box?

with the bins gone, I really think there is almost double the space

 

Northface base camp duffel is supposedly waterproof. And beefy and thick as hell. I just got one before I came back from the states. Heavy duty stuff that will keep 99% of water out. I've heard of northface bags lasting 20 years.

 

I rock a tonneau cover with rubbermaids and it is fine for me

I've talked to a few people who have bought them and they swear by them. I'm going to pick up one this weekend for in the winter as my tonneau cover isn't exactly water tight

yeah I think there is x2 the space! Plus the stuff is locked inside and out of sight but easy to get to when you need it. I looked at taking the bottom out as well but you don’t really gain anything, i’d rather have it in and keep stuff from trying to go under the carpet or anything.

 

I can't think of the name, but some people on here have them and my dad has one. The bins. They're awesome. They're black and gray with the orange latches that can lock. Someone help me out? I've tried searching for them. Hmmm
