I recently installed a K&N CAI on my '13 Tacoma. Once installed it'd start then shut down right after. A K&N tech said that I needed to switch the air sensor 180degrees. After doing that it still failed. Has anyone else had problems with CAI on '12 and up Tacomas? TRD doesn't make one because a pump is in the way. Any advice would be appreciated!

It is such a simple installation ...which leads me to believe you touched the MAF sensor or got it dirty somehow so it's not reading ? Also double check any vac hoses there is one on the bottom you may have forgot to reconnect maybe ? Go buy some MAF sensor cleaner DO NOT just use anything from home and read the instructions carefully.

I have the AFE Stage 2 intake with the volant air scoop and no problems on my 2013. Sounds like a install error somewhere. You might have a vacuum leak at the MAF sensor. Check all connects that you disconnected too.

I have the K&N CAI and havent had any problems at all. Snap a quick pic and I'll post up what mine looks like as well. Only thing that could be off would be the MAF sensor or the vacuum tube that goes to the fuel pressure regulator

Does your air pump face like that? Its hard to see the MAF due to it being on the bottom as well. Did you get the two inlet hose pieces screwed in good enough? (careful, they break EASY)

Put the stock parts back on and see if the issue is still there.

This ^^^ with the exception of just leave the stock parts installed. You aen't gaining anything with a CAI as the truck already has a stock CAI.

When i installed my volant CAI i did it to full instructions. Went to start it and it shut off right away, i was like wtf. Tried it 10 seconds later it fired up and has never had an issue since. Weird that it keeps doing it, probably an air hose malfunction

Thank you for the all the support! I double and triple checked all the connections, I cleaned the air sensor, and tried installing it every way possible (K&N suggested switching it around). It looked identical to the picture of the installed one that was posted. It still started up fine and then would shut down. I reinstalled all the stock parts and it started up fine right away. I don't know what the issue could be. I'm sending it back, I don't know if I should try a different brand or if it was a faulty kit.

Thats really odd that it didnt work, but Im guessing either faulty kit, or something just didnt seal good and a vacuum leak was causing the shut down.

And the stock intake sits right on top of the motor, so its technically heating the air box up and defeating the snorkel portion of itself FYI. This kit gains 8 hp/tq over stock so it isnt just a better design, it actually does work. Is that alot of extra gain? No, not really, but damn it sounds sooooo good.

K&N filters are oiled (sometimes too much by their owners). Oil on the MAF may coat it and attract dirt and that may affect its accuracy. Oiled filters may not be a good choice for a MAF engine.

Did you disconnect the negative battery cable? The Ecu needs to re-learn and adjust idle points and so on. My truck just did the same after reinstalling my TRD cai and it runs perfect now.

Using the K&N filter increases the silica rate (sand) to your engine. The oil will collect some.......some ......but I would stick to the oem or drop in an AMSOIL to the factory box. My son and I did an analysis on the K&N's. We oil sampled different trucks and applications. your silica rate Will increase. If you do not believe it, sample your own oil, before and after you change out the airbox...

If it is not the trd intake then I strongly advice not to do it and stick with stock. Stock is one of the best cold air application I have seen directly from factory on any vehicle

The new TRD intake made by k&n is well know for causing a lean issue.... I wouldn't run it. Try the afe.

Don't worry about TRD and Toyota brand loyalty..... TRD awards contracts to real manufacturers who stamp a TRD logo on it.
The TRD exhaust is made by bosal for instance.

It could possibly be too much oil on the filter even though it's new. Starting up and shutting down right away tells me the engine is not getting enough air. This might be a dumb questions, but I'll ask anyways, is there anything in the tube that could cause air flow restriction?

Hmm... I've been thinking a lot about this. Was I supposed to oil the filter prior to installation? Because, I did and maybe that was restricting air flow? I know I didn't over oil it, I was pretty stingy with applying it.

It's probably not air restriction but it can be oil fouling the MAF sensor. (I said this earlier, are you reading your own thread?)

K&N filters are properly oiled right out of the box so you should not have had to add to it.
