Am I the only one that think these people need to pay back what they spent?

In a nut shell the company (Xerox) managing the EBT card balance had a computer glitch. Retailers are supposed to limit spending in such events to $50.00. I'm not sure what stops the EBT card holder from going to multiple retailers or going through check out lines more then once. But, in any case, the retailer didn't limit the purchases and there was a glitch that allowed unlimited spending.

Having heard, read & watched news on this story, not once have I heard one person say the EBT card user should be held responsible. I am so sick & tired of the "give me" mentality of certain groups of people. Our tax $$$ are used in some way to help support these people and they still have the balls to IMO steal. ON top of that no one in the government, the retailer, the media, the EBT card holders or general population even mentions holding the EBT abusers responsible.

For those like me who don't or didn't know, EBT = electronic benefits transfer = food stamps.

I've seen people use the cash back option, hand money to a person holding a 30-pack of budlight. Purchased budlight and went on their way. I had to pay for my 30-pack with my hard earned money.

Cash back? You mean you can just take cash off the card? That's great, I think I'll just become one of those living off the system.

I just recently became aware of what EBT cards were... I know (not as friends) some dude who was buying the EBT cards for like 50 cents on the $. He'd pay some EBT card holder $50 for their EBT card with a $100 balance. This gives the card holder $50 in cash & him $100 worth of shit we're paying for.

Can't say I'm surprised about anything anymore. Government waste and people mooching off my tax dollars is at an all time high. It's ridiculous.

Even the hard working people I know that actually deserve the help (you know, actually work hard, contribute to society, and aren't complete sbags gaming the system) could make several cuts to their wants to avoid taking a hand out. Bottom line is that people are fiscally irresponsible and make poor choices, for which hard working tax payers have to pay the price. Sad state of affairs in this great country today. Everyone in this country should subscribe to Dave Ramsey's teachings (though I don't live by or agree with them all) and we'd be in great shape.

I hope we turn it around soon. If not, we'll be Europe before we know it. Take it from someone who's been to Europe more times than I can count. It's a great place to visit. But you'd never want to live there to deal with the taxes and cost of living because of having to pay for cradle to grave entitlements.

Funny you say that Tom. I have siblings that were born, raised and still live in the EU. Same story, I've visited more times then I can count and always enjoy my visit. BUT, having spent more then a year there myself and them here (they have duel citizenship) overall all of us would rather live in the states for several reasons not excluding taxes.

Yep, cash back. I've also met a couple (not friends) who refuse to get married...dude has a decent paying job, girl is unemployed... they have 4 kids, all minors...mother and kids have government insurance (whatever it's called), cash assitance, and food stamps...they're not together in in the govt's eyes...dude just has to sign a letter stating he helps them with $200 bucks a month whenever she has to re-apply for that stuff....so no child support for the dude...live happily with his income plus all the goodies she's getting for the kids....tax season comes along...he files single, has to pay, but if fine with it because mother is going to end up with a fat tax check...all this at a kid's b-day party, while the couple is sitting down together...hugging, legs crossed and what not with a beer in their hand...they beat the system.

I have heard stories of people using these in the liquor stores and strip joints. I put the blame on them but also the states should regulate them a lot more.

I said "nice truck" he smiled & said "thanks, got her yesterday"

I know of several examples of this. I don't understand why no one has any shame anymore.

We can see why the GOP/conservatives do not like to fund social welfare programs, it is because of those who abuse the system. But like op i was so flamed about not hearing a single damn thing about FIND THOSE WHO ABUSED THE EBT that day.
I mean seriously people accidentally get hundreds of thousands of dollars due to a banking error and when they spend all that money and get caught they are charged with fraud.
Why haven't people been arrested yet.

Because they are in need and can't help themselves. They need a break, because they never get one. So let's cut em some slack.

Sorry.....had to insert a little sarcasm here. We all know this will never happen though. Once again, mooches get away with just about anything and the hard working taxpayers get stuck with the bill.

I think the retailers should have to repay it for not limiting it and everyone lose benefits for taking advantage of the system. doubt either will happen though.

There should be Government warehouses full of mostly local, healthy food that the EBT user would have to use. Also mandatory, random drug screening.

I'm not opposed to helping those who actually need help so long as they are doing everything in their power to help themselves but, that's sure not what appears to be going on.

I just can't understand why there is no public outrage at these theiving bastards. Rather or not it comes from out tax $$$ or Wal-Mart "passing" their savings along to us. And again, not one source if heard or watched has condemned the crooked POSs.

Really? So the retailer should be responsible for people stealing from the government? Well that is what is going to happen. Wal-Mart is on the hook for it. Doesn't make it right in my view. People knew what they were doing...that's why some of them had 7 carts full and the shelves were emptied and some stores were so crowded that they had to close due to occupant load. I'm sorry I just can't agree with penalizing the government (we the people) or the retailer for these losers knowingly stealing. But now I understand why they get away with it.

So how do you stop them from going to several stores or several check out lines?

I do like the thought of them losing their EBT cards at least until the amount they stole was paid back.

I like the way you guys think. All of those drawing off the system could essentially work to support their own needs if the system was set up. Kinda like the unemployed butcher could cut the beef, the unemployed stock clerk could stock the shelves, the unemployed cashier could check them out, the unemployed truck driver could deliver the products and so on....
