also isn’t it illegal (at least in some states) to remove the head rests if the vehicle came with them from the factory?

    yeah i think so.

I know some old cars(from like the 50’s 60’s 70’s) have a few different laws on some stuff. only know this because my uncle has an old GTO and it only have one side mirror and I asked why.

But all newer cars/truck have head rests and I think if they come with them factory they have to keep them. Hell i don’t think you can even remove the TPMS or can you?(legally)

I actually don't see the head rests as being an issue. To me it is nice to rest my' head on them while driving and besides I would rather have a sore neck then be dead

The 05 06 models you could ground out a wire to shut the light off. That's what I did

I left mine on. I used to work for a Chiropractor, and if you saw some of the neck injuries from whiplash....Shudder.
We had a guy who'd been rear-ended and had to have every vertebrae in his neck surgically fused. To look left or right he had to turn his torso, not his neck.

To get around the visibility problem I simply adjusted the passenger seat until it wasn't blocking my view of the passenger window...

I did some research and apparently around 2008 the federal government issued new regulations about head restraints which explains what I noticed with my new truck. Whether that was based on actual science or written more by lawyers is up for debate. At any rate I found a work-around based on other people that had the same problem. I just turned the driver's headrest around. Now it looks just like all the other headrests I've ever used and my view over my left shoulder is unobstructed (see pic).

Apparently we all agree that manipulating the head restraints carries some risk. In fact some people even think that it is dumb and irresponsible. So if changing the head restraint in order to see better is dumb, than would we all agree that removing the head restraint completely, not wearing a seatbelt and no airbag would then be downright inexcusable? You're with me right? Now how many of you critics ride motorcycles?

Because deaths from riding motorcycles are 30 times more than that of automobiles, and 80% of reported motorcycle crashes involve injury or death vs. just 20% of automobiles. So I'm just wondering, can anyone of you that has ever ridden a motorcycle honestly say that removing a headrest in a truck is 'dumber' or more risky than riding a motorcycle? This is a serious question, and I'd love it if someone had the stones to give me a reasonable answer.

This goes back to your argument of driving an old muscle car. Disabling a safety feature vs. driving a vehicle that never had it to begin with. I drive a motorcycle similar to how someone drives a prized show car. Low miles, fair weather and on quiet back roads. It is more dangerous than driving in a car and, because of that, I haven't been on it since my wife got pregnant. Even on a motorcycle though, there are things you can do to make yourself safer such as wearing all your gear and a proper helmet. I would equate removing your front head rests to riding with one of those non-DOT compliant skull caps. Under normal driving, it makes no difference but in the event of a collision, it can be the difference between walking away and a serious injury or death.

Not sure where you're getting your stats, but in 2011 there were 32,367 automobile deaths, and only 4,612 motorcycle deaths.

That being said, I'd consider removing your headrests more dangerous. Accidents are more likely to happen at night or in bad weather. In either case, I don't ride. I typically only ride on sunny days, and for only half the year. I drive my truck the rest of the time.
While I'll admit that riding a motorcycle is an inherently dangerous activity, I wear my gear, drive defensively, and am always on high alert when I'm riding. I'm doing what I can to minimize the risk of injury.
What you're doing by removing your headrests is increasing the risk of injury. So yeah, it's dumber.

Umm.. I had a model 2001 Tacoma, which I bought in the year 2000. My typo. Then I bought a new truck in Feb. of this year. Seriously, they let you do that now. In fact you can even buy a new truck every year if you wanted. Really!

Why would I even make up something like that? Do you think I drive a Yugo and just want everyone to think I'm cool by pretending to own a Tacoma?
