ATRAC M/T stall on uphill climb.

Asking for any insight or input.

Went offroading today. Uphill climb. 4Low ATRAC on. 1st gear all the way. Atrac kicking in. After a while of wheels spinning, and ATRAC doing it's thing, truck stalls out.

Not sure why. I know I was gasing the whole time, my foot never left it. Never allowed the engine idle out while in gear. And I don't believe I had my foot on the clutch, from what I have read on the FJ forums, depressing the clutch would kill the ATRAC. Is there something different with ATRAC equiped Manual transmission Tacomas as compared to Automatics? Any one have any technical input on this?

 

ATRAC probably tried to stop the wheel spinning with the brakes, killing the truck in the process.

Turn ATRAC off if you go wheeling, pretty simple actually.

 

If you have a manual trans I'm pretty sure you don't have A-TRAC you have TRAC. A-TRAC comes on Auto tranny models.

 

I don't have it. My 09" is a manual.
I have stability control, And that auto LSD crap.

 

Just a FYI..
If you hold down the button to turn off trac and turn on Auto-LSD and continue to hold it, it disables all traction control all together (Even Auto-LSD).

 

I have the 09 Offroad. It has A-trac and the E-Locker, and it is a manual trans.


Update:
I did further reading on the A-trac subject on some other forums. It seems that A-trac works best at a constant 2000 RPM. Next time I will give it a shot, be a little more easy on the gas.

 

Sorry, but I cannot find it on the 09 Toyota Tacoma website where it lists A-TRAC as an option with a manual transmission. Auto trans only.

You have the A-Trac button down in front of the console? I didn't think you could get it on the manual.

 

Atrac is part of the TRD off road package. No other package has it.

 

Sorry to revive such a long dead thread, but it was the only one I found in my search that matched my issue.

First of all, the 09 and up MT TRD OR has atrac. The pic TRDnAZ posted was for downhill assist, not atrac.

Anyhow, I have a similar problem with atrac when climbing steep hills. I'll be chugging along when a tire breaks loose, atrac hits the brake and my rpm drops down killing my momentum or even stalling me out. My problem is that it happens so quick I sometimes can't compensate with the clutch. Was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue, and maybe some tips/ a solution.

I don't want to simply turn atrac off, because it actually is very helpful in a lot of situations.

If this has been posted a million times before, don't freak out, I simply didn't find it.

 

Did you engage the locking diff on the climb?

If not, try that as that'll keep you from developing a huge left/right wheelspeed difference on the heavily weight-transferred rear axle.

 

Happens with or without the rear lockers engaged but less often when engaged. If the locker is engaged, it just happens when one of the front wheels break free. In any case, I don't use the locker unless I get into really sticky situations, while atrac stays on MOST of the time.

 

My '09 had A-TRAC. Worked really, really well, too. Depressing the clutch did not disengage A-TRAC. Note that the manual FJs have a different set up than the manual Tacomas; they are full time 4wd (AWD).

 

You're right, but even at below 3 mph it would still happen less because atrac won't engage in the rear.
