6 1/2" subs for daily driver

i have a 99 tacoma and i want to run a pair of 6.5 subs in the rear speakers stock locations but not sure what brands to look at ive looked at Kicker and JL also Digital Designs and a pair of Tang Bangs.

I am between the JL and DD b/c i have had JL and heard DD and both sounded great but those were 8" subs in ported boxes , so im not sure on the 6.5s

i want whatever sub will give be the best deep bass response in the location they are being installed in.



got rid of the center sub for more room and i dont really want a ton of bass just something to make the music sound better, any kind of box is out of the question i want to keep both my seats and the storage under the seats

has anyone done this type of install before

6.5" subs? sounds like a mid range speaker.
Im running 6.5" components in my front doors are they are really nice. nothing like a "sub" though...

 

You wont get much bass from them, but they would function as good midrange woofers. The airspace just isnt there to install a real sub

 

yea, you would need to have a sealed or ported box for them, just installing them into the doors would not give them what they need to sound right...unless you built some sort of fiberglass box to fit in the door itself

 

Depends on what the area behind it looks like. There are many different types of subs out there that have vastly different requirements. See what you got behind there and then see if you can find a suitable sub to go in it.

Just because it's a small woofer, don't mean it can't perform well. Installation is the key in any speaker. Done right, it'll do fine. I think your install will have a larger impact on performance than which mini-sub you choose. Interesting install idea, I like it.

what ill end up doing is sealing off that cab area behind the speaker with great stuff and fiberglass then dinomatting all the metal areas to reduce vibrations basically making that area a sealed inclosure

i looked into the kickers first then JL and now im thinking about DD

Anyone who says 6.5" subs can't rock out is either a liar or just hasn't tried it yet for themselves. In my IS300 that I just sold (to get the Taco) I had four of these in a sealed box on 600RMS and they freakin pound. They are actually very nice sounding too. I've got the trophies from the sound quality competitions to prove it. I say fucking go for it! If you need any help with enclosure design let me know. I'd be happy to lend a helping hand!

yeah for $100 for the pair its worth a shot and i wont overwork my amp either, i may give them a shot

which is the RMS rating i would need to run at?

75 is the RMS rating but honestly, I've run double that and they were happy as a clam. Just watch out for over excursion and build them the correct box and they will be freakin sweet.

 

thats the only problem im running into is they are not going in a "box" im going to seal off the rear cab corners of my ext cab and put the 6.5s in the stock speaker locations

im not sure if that would be classified as IB or free air

 

did you ever do this? I have an 8" ported sub at home in my computer room and it has knockin my stuff off the walls. I think a 6.5" sub can make noise if done right.

 

not yet im really busy with work right now, but i have taken the truck to the shop for them to look at teh best possible way to seal the cab corners i will post on the install when i get around to doing it

Very nice. Just looking for ways to add some lower end, but keep the space usable!

 

Not sure how much space is under your seat, but I stuffed a custom box with a shallow mount 8" pioneer sub under the passenger seat of my nissan; it works really really well. Back when i had my 01 xcab i replaced my rear speakers with a JL8W3 in each side. I made a sealed fiberglass enclouser for them. They were on the small side of what the subs needed but they still sounded fantastic and could get down. Honestly though, if there was good 6.5" subs back then i would have gone that route. Theres def enough space for 6.5"s in a good fiberglass enclouser.

 

i want sundown x6.5...they are beasts but they are currently discontinued for new version coming out.....
