wheel bearing and dealership price?

I have an 04 Tacoma....called the local dealership about just bringing them my spindles to press the old bearing s out. They quoted me 360 dollars and said be prepared to buy new hubs? Not sure what they are talking about. I made sure that they knew it was for an 04. Any clue what they are talking about?

This is the first gen section!!! Your giving him 2nd gen info guys. I'm pretty sure bamatoy does 2nd gen hubs, first gen the bearing is pressed into the whole spindle assy.
I brought my spindles to the local dealer to get the old bearings pressed out and the new in. I supplied napa bearings (wish I went oe) it was $200 labor. And no new hub was needed.. Id get timken bearings and seals from rockauto an take them to a dealer who doesnt want twice as much as it worth to do, $200 is even steep. Go to a different dealer.

 

First two replies are wrong.

First gens are pressed in. Buy the bearings find a mom and pop shop with a press and pay them a nominal fee instead of giving your money to the stealer ship.

 

The hub bearing lists for 2003-2008 so does his 2004 not fall into that year range?

 

Thats a manufacturer error.. They meant 05-08

 

WOW!!!! 360 is way too much to pay especially if you're taking in the spindle. its only $40 here to press out old bearing and press in the new one. The hub should not need to be changed unless you have been driving around with a busted bearing. don't forget the seals and applicable lock nuts for 2wd or 4wd.

 

I am going to call another dealership an hour or so away and see what they say

 

Here is the skinny. The 2003-2008 that was being mentioned is for the 4Runner. The 4Runner started using the bearing module assemblies in 2003. (like the ones that I sell) So in some cases a catalog error will show 2003-2008 (or higher) due to this difference.

Now as for the wheel hub: Depending on how bad the bearing is, and how LONG it has been bad, a failed bearing will cause the wheel hub to rub into the metal part of the outer seal. This will score the wheel hub. You can't tell this until you have the assembly pressed apart. That is why they said to be PREPARED to replace the wheel hub. It may or may not need to be replaced depending on the severity of the bearing damage.

If I were the OP I would see if I could arrange transportation while the truck was down. Then take the spindle assembly down to a shop and get it pressed apart. INSPECT EVERYTHING for any signs of damage. Then order the replacement parts you need (Including replacing both the inner and outer seals, and check the CV shaft sealing surface for problems) and take all the new parts back to the shop and get them pressed together.

 

Okay every one, I know he has a first gen... I'm just talking about shops and dealerships... I needed to get mine done, so I pulled the spindle and had the new seals and hub/bearing in hand and took it to the Nappa machine shop in down town Abq. They would not even touch it for the pressing work. So I called all the dealers in town and they all quoted $300-$400 just in labor to press the old stuff apart and new together... My jaw just dropped! Just by chance I called the Toyota dealer up in Santa Fe and they quoted $99! Needless to say I got it done there... All in all it was about $250 for parts and labor, not to bad. Just go to show you the differences in dealerships. I did find out once I got it all done that the guy that quoted me that price was one of the mechanics filling in and answering the phone, so i know he understood what i needed done, unlike the normal service wrighters that just look at a computer for estimants
