I have seen some post on here that say just provide your vin to get the correct part, is there any danger in doing just that like someone using your vin to get keys to your truck from the dealer?

    I don't have personal experience....

But the VIN # is data about your truck and shouldn't be 'attached' to any of your personal identification or personal information (if that's what you're wondering about).

The problem with that is your VIN is tattooed all over the truck. Along the frame, driver side dash by the windshield, door jamb and tailgate to name a few.

If you're going through a business, I wouldn't worry about it... The businesses want it so they can be sure to send you the correct item for your truck. But if it was a private citizen, I'd be leary.

Yeah...I wouldn't be giving it out to folks selling you parts on craigslist or fleabay-But most parts departments are dealerships that use the VIN use it to get into the right class/model/options package to order your parts.

Like was said- You can get the VIN off several places on the truck...

Not helpful... but VIN means Vehicle Identification Number. Saying VIN Number or VIN # is redundant.

    Just a pet Peeve.

FWIW, I have no problem providing mine to a dealer or something if I need a part. I don't worry about somebody making a key and stealing my truck. I have insurance for that. It's worth getting the correct part.

    True...

Although, the dealerships who make the keys...should require some sort of personal identification to prove you own the truck. If not, that's the dealerships problem for making a key to someone who doesn't own the truck.

Another thought - a VIN# could be used for other stolen cars/parts. Say for instance...someone steals a tacoma. The VIN# is part of the insurance claim - and why the VIN# is plastered all over your truck.

The stolen truck is taken apart and sold as parts. The original VIN# is stripped off it and new (fake) VIN tags are made using YOUR VIN#. Rendering those stolen parts - untraceable as 'stolen'
